Hulu may not have a lot of new action movies in September, but it does have two of the best from the year 2014.
Kingsman: The Secret Service, starring Smoke‘s Taron Egerton, is an underrated action comedy, while John Wick is a low-budget action thriller that grew to become one of the most bankable action franchises of the last decade.
It’s a coincidence that both films were released in the same year and that they came out of nowhere to become hits.
You can find these films among the complete lineup of the Watch With Us team’s roundup of the great action movies on Hulu below.

Director Matthew Vaughn comes close to recapturing some of the over-the-top aspects of ’60s spy films in the action comedy Kingsman: The Secret Service. Taron Egerton stars as Gary “Eggsy” Unwin, a young man who never had the chance to live up to his potential.
Harry Hart (Colin Firth) decides to change that when he recruits Eggsy to become part of Kingsman, an elite intelligence organization that operates outside the British government. Samuel L. Jackson costars as a mad billionaire, Richmond Valentine, who is going full Bond villain with his plan to remake the world. Valentine is so effective at picking his allies that even Kingsman is compromised as Earth teeters towards armageddon.

For the first few minutes of this film, it’s the touching story of John (Keanu Reeves), a recently widowed man who finds joy and a reason to keep living in the form of a dog that his late wife left for him to take care of.
Then a wannabe Russian gangster, Iosef Tarasov (Alfie Allen), makes the monumental error of murdering John’s dog, stealing his car and leaving John for dead. That’s when this movie becomes John Wick, the riveting revenge action thriller that revitalized the genre. Everyone on the criminal underworld knows John by his reputation for killing, and they’re about to learn why it doesn’t pay to anger him.

The leading character of The Amateur is about as far from a traditional action hero as you can get. Charlie Heller (Rami Malek) is just a normal guy who works for the CIA as a cryptographer. He was also happily married to Sarah Heller (Rachel Brosnahan) until she was murdered by terrorists.
Charlie’s desire for revenge is so great that he blackmails his boss at the CIA, Alex Moore (Holt McCallany), to give him the training he needs to target the men who killed his wife. Robert “Hendo” Henderson (Laurence Fishburne) gives Charlie some guidance, but this is a path that he may not be able to come back from.

Before 2008, the idea of Liam Neeson as an action hero may have seemed ridiculous. But he was the perfect choice to headline Taken as former CIA agent Bryan Mills. Although Bryan is largely estranged from his ex-wife, Lenore (Famke Janssen), and their daughter, Kim (Maggie Grace), he’s the first and only call that Kim makes when she’s abducted by human traffickers in Europe.
That turns out to be a very serious mistake by the kidnappers, because Bryan jumps on the next plane to Europe and unleashes his particular set of skills in a quest to rescue Kim before she’s lost for good.

James Cameron wanted to make Alita: Battle Angel for years, but he had to settle for co-writing the script and producing the film for director Robert Rodriguez. No one knows for sure who Alita (Rosa Salazar) was before she was recovered by Dr. Dyson Ido (Christoph Waltz) in a scrapyard. From that moment on, Alita was born again and dedicated to helping Ido and her small circle of friends.
Alita’s cyborg body and warrior skills attract the wrong kind of attention from the rulers, who look down on the people who have to live on the surface. Alita is willing to defy those in power, even if it means endangering herself in the process.

Many of Uncharted’s best action scenes were directly lifted from the video games that inspired the film. Unsurprisingly, those sequences work really well in live-action blockbusters like this one. The MCU’s Spider-Man, Tom Holland, stars as Nathan Drake, an orphan who is recruited by treasure hunter Victor “Sully” Sullivan (Mark Wahlberg) with the promise of a potential fortune and a lead in tracking down Nate’s missing brother, Sam (Rudy Pankow).
Nate and Sully soon find themselves in a race to beat millionaire Santiago Moncada (Antonio Banderas) to the treasure of a lifetime. There’s a team of mercenaries under Santiago’s command, and they’re more than willing to kill Nate and Sully if they stand between them and the treasure.

Even among action comedies, Bullet Train is uncommonly funny. A lot of the credit for that has to go to Brad Pitt’s hysterical performance as an aging assassin codenamed Ladybug. He’s had enough killing for one lifetime, but he’s stuck on a super-fast bullet train in Japan with several other assassins — some of whom really want Ladybug dead.
The irony is that Ladybug wasn’t even supposed to be on the train. He’s just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Not that the other killers are going to care when it’s a choice between their survival or Ladybug’s life.

Most of the modern Planet of the Apes movies are currently MIA on Hulu, but the most recent installment, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, is an impressive sci-fi action flick in its own right. The story follows Noa (Owen Teague), a young chimpanzee from the Eagle tribe who was born hundreds of years after the death of Caesar.
The tyrant ape Proximus Caesar (Kevin Durand) has taken apes and humans alike as his slaves, including Noa’s tribe. To free his people, Noa has to work with Mae (Freya Allan), a human girl who may not be a trustworthy ally.

Every Predator movie is currently streaming on Hulu, but the standalone prequel Prey brings a welcome modern touch to the classic franchise. In 1719, Naru (Amber Midthunder) is a young Comanche woman who yearns to be a warrior like her brother. But the rest of the tribe has no time or patience for Naru’s ambitions.
When a primitive Predator (Dane DiLiegro) arrives, the men in Naru’s tribe are easy targets for the intergalactic hunter. To stop this threat, Naru has to succeed where the other warriors failed. When fighting this Predator, there is no room for error.
Prey is streaming on Hulu.

Aliens was only James Cameron’s second movie with a big budget, and he confidently transformed the horror of the original Alien into an all-time classic sci-fi action adventure. Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) survived the events of the first movie, only to learn that she spent decades in stasis and doesn’t have any family left.
Without any other prospects, Ripley accompanies a team of space marines to a colony on LV-426. Even Ripley is stunned by the scope of the Xenomorph infestation waiting for them there. These creatures are heavily resistant to conventional weapons and Ripley’s allies are dropping like flies around her.
