‘No Hard Feelings’ (2023)
The hilarious and heartfelt movie No Hard Feelings starring Jennifer Lawrence is the perfect rom-com to watch during the summer. Lawrence plays Maddie, a down-on-her-luck waitress in desperate need of cash — so much so that she responds to a Craigslist ad from two parents (Matthew Broderick and Laura Benanti) who want to hire someone to “romance” (aka have sex with) their awkward teenage son, Percy. Unfortunately for Maddie, Percy (Andrew Barth Feldman) isn’t your typical horned-up teenage boy.
He’s pretty terrified by her performative “sexiness” and would much rather get to know her as a human being. This makes it much more difficult to get the job done, but it also means Maddie ends up opening up to Percy in a way she never has before. The fake relationship yields real and unexpected connections — in between naked fistfights and hilarious skin ailments, of course. The whole story takes place in the summer before Percy leaves for college, making it a perfect encapsulation of that strange time between teenager and young adult.

‘Bros’ (2022)
Despite being a box office bomb, this Billy Eichner rom-com is refreshingly wholesome while still being sexy and hilarious. Eichner plays Bobby, a podcaster and curator of an LGBTQIA+ museum in New York City. When he meets Aaron (Luke Macfarlane), Bobby’s stunned by how not his type Aaron is — and how much they seem to have in common.
Produced by Judd Apatow and directed by Nick Stoller, Bros is a refreshingly simple love story that takes a realistic look at dating in the LGBTQIA+ community without relying on stereotypes or eschewing laughs. With sun-dappled shots of Central Park and Provincetown, this movie screams “Summer Romance.”

‘She’s the Man’ (2006)
Viola (Amanda Bynes) has spent the break playing soccer with her besties and her boyfriend, Justin (Robert Hoffman). But when her high school announces they’re cutting the girls’ team, Viola takes a convenient opportunity to swap places with her twin brother, Sebastian (James Kirk), and join the boys’ team at his new private school. One big problem — she’s got some serious chemistry with her roommate Duke (Channing Tatum), which really messes with his head.
Based on William Shakespeare’s comedy Twelfth Night, She’s the Man is a quirky teen sports comedy with a great soundtrack and some hilarious one-liners. (And excellent physical comedy, too — a scene in which Duke tries to look cool while answering his flip phone remains one of Tatum’s best comedic moments to this day.)

‘Some Like It Hot’ (1959)

This classic Marilyn Monroe film stars Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon as two musicians who witness a mob hit — so they go on the run by impersonating women in an all-female band. Joe (Curtis) and Jerry (Lemmon) must resist the urge to flirt with their winsome bandmate Sugar Kane (Monroe) or risk exposure.
The top-notch performances, zany shenanigans and zippy soundtrack make Some Like It Hot a timeless classic. The title and the tropical setting make it a great summer movie. Some of the jokes are pretty politically incorrect by today’s standards, but as the film’s last line humorously reminds us, “Nobody’s perfect.”
