Aaron Rodgers’ 1st Day at Steelers Camp Did Not Get Off to a Good Start

Aaron Rodgers’ first pass on his first official day at Pittsburgh Steelers training camp was caught — but unfortunately it was by a member of the defensive team.

Rodgers, 41, threw an interception to linebacker Patrick Queen on his first throw at the team’s opening day of camp at St. Vincent College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, on Thursday, July 24.

“It’s good to get that out the way,” Rodgers told reporters afterward. “Anybody that’s watched me practice over the years, you like to try certain throws at certain times, and anybody that’s watched me in the games knows I’ve been pretty stellar taking care of the football over the years.”

He continued, “It’s going to be a good challenge for me throwing in this heat every single day. I look forward to it, but I’m going to throw some picks, but I’m going to throw some touchdowns, too.”

Rodgers signed a one-year, $13.6 million contract with the Steelers in June.

The quarterback is finding his rhythm again after a busy offseason that saw him get married to his wife, Brittani. Rodgers announced the news at Steelers minicamp on June 10, revealing the wedding happened “a couple months ago.”

Rodgers has yet to reveal the identity of his wife, telling ESPN’s Pat McAfee on June 24 that she’s a “private person.”

For the time being, Rodgers is roommates with Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf in the St. Vincent College dorms for the duration of training camp.

“I was secretly hoping it wasn’t a big lineman or something,” Rodgers said on Thursday. “Maybe somebody [who] cared about their hygiene a little bit. So, when I walked in I saw a standard suitcase. I said, ‘Oh, I think it’s going to be good. This is probably DK.’”

Metcalf, 27, who was traded to the Steelers in March, said their stint as roommates got off to a surprising start.

“He knocked on my door, and I thought it was the front door, and it was actually my bathroom door,” Metcalf told reporters on Thursday. “He was like, ‘Oh man, I was hoping it was you.’ I was like, ‘I did not think I was going to have a roommate, but glad to see you, too.’”

Metcalf added, “It was a good experience just to see his face and knowing that we could continue conversations outside the meeting room.”

Steelers training camp runs through August 12. The team opens the regular season against the New York Jets — Rodgers’ former team — on September 7.
