Andy Cohen has no regrets about asking Matty Healy’s mom, Denise Welch, about Taylor Swift.
After Cohen, 57, asked Welch, 67, about Swift’s Tortured Poets Department album during Watch What Happens Live on Thursday, July 24, a fan took to X to ask why the talk show host would bring up the album and the pop star’s relationship with Healy, 36.
“Oh no! @Andy why ask this?” the fan wrote on Friday, July 25.
Cohen’s response was simple: “why NOT?”
The fan wrote back, “Love you, but being both a 1975 and TS fan is already hard enough on these mean internet streets. Today is ROUGH!”
Cohen replied with a smiley face.
On Thursday, Cohen asked Welch about her reaction to The Tortured Poets Department, which many fans believed was inspired by Healy after his relationship with Swift, 35, in 2023.
“Obviously on pain of death can I talk about that episode, but not being her mother-in-law is a role that I’m glad that I lost,” Welch said, earning gasps from the WWHL audience.
“Not that I have anything against her at all,” the British TV personality quickly added. “It was just — it was tricky.”
Welch lamented that Swift can tell her side of the story via her music, but others who try to speak out seemingly face backlash from fans.
“Listen, you’re not allowed to say anything, and then she writes a whole album, you know, about it,” she said.
The broadcaster added that Healy has “taken it all in completely good grace” and they’ve “moved on.”
“He’s very happy with his amazing fiancée, Gabriella, Gabbriette [Bechtel], who is gorgeous,” she said.
Healy and Swift were first linked when the “Cruel Summer” hitmaker attended several of his band The 1975’s shows in 2014. The U.K. native revealed that he and Swift had “swapped phone numbers” at the time.
“I mean, bloody hell, what am I going to do? Go out with Taylor Swift? She’s a sensation. I wouldn’t say no!” he said during a radio interview.
Healy later caused controversy when he said that it would be “emasculating” to date someone more famous than him, name-dropping Swift, in a 2016 interview with Q Magazine.
“It’s just interesting to me how interested the world is about Taylor Swift,” he said. “The reason I mention that is because if I had [properly] gone out with Taylor Swift, I would’ve been, ‘F***ing hell, I am not being Taylor Swift’s boyfriend.’ You know, ‘F***. That.’”
He clarified in an Elle interview later that year that his comments were taken out of context and said he’s “not a misogynist” but could be “an idiot on occasion.”
“I have said on countless occasions that I found her to be one of the most gracious, hard-working, creatively gifted and beautiful women that I have had the pleasure to meet. I personally have a lot of respect and admiration for her. Why would I not?” he added of Swift.
Swift and Healy were linked again in May 2023, but both parties have remained tight-lipped about the exact timeline and nature of their romance. However, their split was confirmed the following month. He moved on with model Bechtel that September. The pair got engaged in June 2024.
Meanwhile, Swift began dating Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce in summer 2023, and they went public with their romance that September.
