Apple has unveiled the third generation of its AirPods Pro, introducing a redesigned model with major upgrades in sound, fitness tracking and real-time translation. The new earbuds, announced on Apple's official website, are available for pre-order now and will reach stores on Friday, September 19, priced at $249 in the US.
Noise cancellation twice as effective
Apple says AirPods Pro 3 feature the most advanced in-ear Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) available. The system removes up to twice as much noise as the second-generation AirPods Pro and four times more than the original model. A new multiport acoustic design, foam-infused tips and Adaptive EQ widen the soundstage, sharpen vocals, and improve bass clarity. Playback with ANC enabled now lasts up to eight hours - a 33 per cent increase over the previous version.
Heart rate tracking built in
In a first for AirPods, the Pro 3 include Apple's smallest custom-built heart rate sensor. The photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor shines invisible infrared light 256 times per second to measure blood flow, working in tandem with motion sensors, GPS and Apple Intelligence on iPhone. Users can track over 50 workout types in the Fitness app, while a new feature called Workout Buddy provides personalised, real-time feedback during exercise.
Live translation in real time
Apple is also introducing Live Translation, powered by computational audio and Apple Intelligence. The feature enables hands-free conversations across languages, displaying live transcriptions on iPhone when speaking with non-AirPods users. It is available initially in English, French, German, Portuguese and Spanish, with Italian, Japanese, Korean and simplified Chinese to be added later this year.
Improved fit and durability
Apple says it used more than 10,000 ear scans and 100,000 hours of user testing to redesign the fit. AirPods Pro 3 are smaller, ship with five tip sizes including a new XXS option, and have IP57-rated resistance to sweat and water, making them better suited for workouts and outdoor use.
Focus on hearing health
The new earbuds build on Apple's hearing health features introduced last year. Hearing Protection is now certified in the EU and UK, while Conversation Boost which enhances voices in noisy environments has been improved. Transparency mode now runs for up to 10 hours on a single charge, up from six hours in the previous model.
Sustainability targets
AirPods Pro 3 are designed as part of Apple’s 2030 climate plan. The product uses 40 per cent recycled materials, including 100 per cent recycled cobalt in the battery and 65 per cent recycled plastic in the charging case. Packaging is entirely fibre-based and recyclable.
Pricing and availability
The AirPods Pro 3 can be pre-ordered starting today in more than 50 countries, with availability beginning September 19. The US launch price remains at $249.
