Princess Delphine of Belgium has some thoughts on the British royal family — especially when it comes to their feud with Prince Harry.
“I think Harry suffered so much, and I think he was traumatized and it’s coming out now,” Delphine, 57, said during an appearance on the “It’s Reigning Men” podcast on Tuesday, July 15. “This thing about security. I think it’s to do with what happened to his mother.”
She continued, “I understand the guy. He’s just traumatized. And I understand, so he’s doing these things, and everybody’s bullying him, but not thinking about his trauma. And I just find it terrible because he’s just been kind of left.”
Delphine explained that she stays up to date on Harry’s life “a little bit” because she was friends with the late Princess Diana.
“She was just the most sunshine, in the news especially. Then she had these children and everything, and then this death was just horrible,” she said. “Especially seeing these two children left by a very — I thought — a very natural, nice, normal, motherly woman.”
Diana died at age 36 in 1997 following a car crash.
“They lost such an important figure, and I feel very sorry for Harry, because I think that was traumatic for him,” Delphine added during Tuesday’s podcast episode. “William didn’t have a choice, and he’s got this wonderful wife and so on.”
The drama between Harry, 40, and his family escalated earlier this year after he lost an appeal for government-funded security in the U.K. (Harry lost access to protection in his home country in 2020 after he and wife Meghan Markle stepped away from the royals.)
Following the landmark loss, Harry spoke to the BBC in a bombshell interview about the royal rift.
“I would love reconciliation with my family. There’s no point in continuing to fight anymore,” Harry said during the May 2 interview. “Life is precious. I don’t know how much longer my father has.”
He claimed that King Charles III “won’t speak to me” during the same interview, further hinting that his father had something to do with the court loss.
“There is a lot of control and ability in my father’s hands,” Harry said. “Ultimately, this whole thing could be resolved through him. Not necessarily by intervening, but by stepping aside, allowing the experts [to] do what is necessary.”
The Duke of Sussex noted that he has “forgiven” his family after the drama.
“There have been so many disagreements between myself and some of my family,” he added.
