US President Donald Trump is expected to make an announcement at 2 pm Eastern Time (11:30 pm Indian time) on Tuesday, September 2. According to sources, Trump is expected to announce the decision to shift the headquarters of the US Space Command, reversing a decision by his predecesso Joe Biden.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said that Trump "will be making an exciting announcement related to the Department of Defense", foreign media reported without elaborating.
The Department of Defense's image distribution portal initially listed Trump's announcement as being about "US Space Command Headquarters".
It later changed it to say only that "President Trump makes an announcement."
Speculation around Trump's announcement had earlier centered on his recent statements that he wanted to change the name of the Department of Defense to the Department of War.
This is also set to be Trump's first address since his recent discussions with Russian, Chinese and Indian leaders.
Currently, the space base is situated in Colorado.
According to the sources, Trump is seen moving the facility to Alabama.
Tuesday's likely announcement could put an end to a clash between the two states over which should be allowed to host the facility.
Former US President Joe Biden had decided to keep the faclity at its temporary location in Colorado despite a ruling by the Trump 1.0 administration in 2021.
The facility oversees US operations in outer space.
Historically, Colorado has been known to be a Democratic western American state, whereas the southern state of Alabama has been Republican.
