Can the 2030 Commonwealth Games -- widely known as CWG -- be hosted in India? The Union Cabinet -- chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi -- on Wednesday gave the nod to a proposal by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to submit bid for the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2030. The Cabinet also cleared signing of the Host Collaboration Agreement (HCA) along with necessary guarantees from concerned ministries and other authorities, including a required grant-in-aid to the Gujarat state government, should India's bid get accepted.
An international multi-sport event held every four years, the CWG tournament involves athletes from 72 countries, known as the Commonwealth of Nations. It is an event that features a diverse range of sports while promoting relations and cooperation among member countries.
Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium in India's 'ideal host city' pitch
The Centre views Ahmedabad as an ideal host city for the CWG, with its "world-class stadiums, cutting-edge training facilities, and a passionate sporting culture", according to an official statement.
With an estimated capacity of 1.32 lakh, the Narendra Modi Stadium is touted as the world's largest cricket stadium. It has "already demonstrated its capability by successfully hosting the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Final", said the government.
The 2030 CWG is set to witness large-scale participation from member countries, generating jobs, boosting tourism and creating professional opportunities across diverse sectors beyond sports.
The event is also set to give a fillip to local business, besides "inspiring millions of young athletes".
A large number of professionals will be getting opportunities in areas like sports science, event operations and management, logistics and transport coordinators, broadcast and media, IT and communications, public relations and communications, it noted.
"Hosting such a globally prestigious event will foster a strong sense of national pride and unity," said the Cabinet.
"It will also provide a shared national experience and boost the morale of our nation," it noted.
Last Commonwealth Games
The last Commonwealth Games were held in 2022, in Birmingham, England, with participation from 72 countries and more than 5,000 athletes.
If the bid is successful, 2030 will mark the second time India hosts the Commonwealth Games.
India hosted the Commonwealth Games in 2010, when the event was held in the national capital.
The CWG 2026 is scheduled to take place in Glasgow, Scotland.
