Earthquake of magnitude 3.4 jolts Nepal no reports of damage yet

An earthquake of magnitude 3.4 struck Nepal in the early hours of Saturday, the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reported. The tremor was recorded at 03:59 AM IST at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres, with its epicentre located at latitude 27.10°N and longitude 84.71°E.

NCS shared the seismic update on X, stating: “EQ of M: 3.4, On: 26/07/2025 03:59:55 IST, Lat: 27.10 N, Long: 84.71 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Nepal.”

There have been no immediate reports of casualties or structural damage. Authorities are monitoring the situation for further developments.

Shallow earthquakes, like this one, are considered more hazardous than deeper quakes due to their proximity to the surface, which often results in stronger ground shaking and a higher risk of damage.

Nepal is located in one of the world’s most seismically active zones—the Himalayan region—where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates collide. This tectonic activity builds immense geological pressure, making the region highly vulnerable to frequent and potentially devastating earthquakes.

The region’s history of seismic activity includes the catastrophic 2015 earthquake that claimed thousands of lives and caused widespread destruction. Geologists continue to stress the importance of preparedness in this sensitive seismic zone.
