The pair exchanged vows in Las Vegas. The pair exchanged vows in Las Vegas. When asked about how their romance began, Dane told Flaunt magazine in 2008, "It's probably one of the least interesting stories in the world. It went basically like this: 'You wanna go out?' 'Yeah, sure.' Ten months later, we were married."
The California native exited Grey's after six seasons as Dr. Mark Sloan. He returned to the ABC series in 2021 for the first time since his character was killed off.
Dane briefly stepped away from his TNT show The Last Ship in April 2017 amid his battle with depression. "Eric asked for a break to deal with personal issues," Dane's rep told Us in a statement at the time. "He suffers from depression and has asked for a few weeks of downtime and the producers kindly granted that request. He looks forward to returning."
Two months later, he and Gayheart made their first public appearance together since his acting hiatus at the 16th annual Chrysalis Butterfly Ball in Los Angeles.
The Beverly Hills, 90210 alum filed for divorce from Dane after 14 years of marriage, citing "irreconcilable differences" as the cause of the split. At the time, Gayheart sought spousal support and joint legal and physical custody of their two daughters.
"We're doing our best. It isn't easy," Gayheart exclusively told Us of coparenting with her then-estranged husband. "But we are trying and we are committed. ... There are so many things [that make it challenging]."
She continued, "I think that as a female you need to be able to always take care of yourself and never depend on a man. I’m going back to work and I think it’s partly because I want my daughters to see me work. I took some time off to have my kids."
A decade after he and Gayheart made headlines for their leaked nude bathtub video, Dane said he wasn't ashamed of the 2009 footage. "I didn't regret it," he told Glamour of the infamous video, which also featured another woman. "I have no regrets nor do I make any apologies for my life experience. It's my life experience and I am at peace with all of it."
He continued, "I often think about that answer I gave [in 2014 calling it a regret]. And looking back now, was it a mistake? Absolutely not. Three consenting adults, one of them being my wife? I wasn't doing anything wrong. ... We were just three people taking a bath."
"This is us, family vacay 2022 🇫🇷🥳❣️#familia #travel #goodtimes #moretocome #eurodanes," Gayheart captioned an Instagram photo, reuniting with Dane for a family trip.
When Gayheart shared even more footage from her European vacation, eagle-eyed fans spotted a romantic tablescape in the family's hotel room: champagne, white roses and chocolate-covered strawberries, sparking reconciliation rumors.
One month after filing to dismiss her divorce, Gayheart spoke out about where she and Dane stand. "We are best of friends. We are really close. We are great coparents," the actress said in an interview with E! News. "We really figured out the formula to staying a family and I think our kids are benefiting greatly from it and we are as well."
Gayheart added that while she and Dane have faced a lot of setbacks, they’ve also accomplished a lot together.
"I think it’s important to not look at a relationship that ends as a failure. It's just a season. It wasn't a failure. It was a huge success,” she continued. “We were married for, I mean, we are still married, but together for 15 years and we had two beautiful kids so I think that's a successful relationship, and that's how we look at it."
Dane got emotional while reflecting on Gayheart's support during his first interview since revealing his ALS diagnosis. "I talk to her every day," he said on Good Morning America, tearing up as he revealed Gayheart is the first person he calls in times of need. "We have managed to become better friends and better parents and she is … my biggest champion. My most stalwart supporter. And I lean on her."
The actor noted that he's "fighting as much as I can" amid his health battle. "At the end of the day, all I want to do is spend time with my family and work a little bit if I can," he said, adding that his family knows how much "they're loved."
