Gold prices slipped on Wednesday, falling below Rs 1,01,300 per 10 grams on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), down Rs 175 or 0.17 per cent. Silver futures, however, edged marginally higher by Rs 16 to close at Rs 1,13,530 per kilogram.
Globally, spot gold eased 0.1 per cent to $3,376.69 per ounce after touching a near two-week high on Tuesday, while US gold futures also dipped 0.1 per cent to $3,432.40. The decline came as the US dollar rebounded from a recent low, supported by weaker jobs data that raised expectations of a potential rate cut in September.
Investors are also closely watching US President Donald Trump's upcoming appointments to the Federal Reserve and his renewed threats of raising tariffs on Indian goods due to Russian oil imports, further fueling market uncertainty.
Manoj Jain, Director and Head of Commodity and Currency Research at Prithvi Finmart, said:
"Gold and silver extended gains earlier due to safe-haven buying amid US trade tariff concerns and weakness in US equity markets. Gold is trading near its long-term resistance at $3,454 per ounce and may strengthen further if it sustains above this level. We expect volatility to continue this week with gold likely trading between $3,360–3,480 per ounce and silver between $35.80–38.40 per ounce."
In domestic markets, gold October futures settled at Rs 1,01,338 per 10 grams, while silver September futures closed at Rs 1,13,504 per kilogram.
Support and resistance levels:
Gold (MCX): Support – Rs 1,00,850–1,00,475; Resistance – Rs 1,01,555–1,02,200
Silver (MCX): Support – Rs 1,12,800–1,12,200; Resistance – Rs 1,14,200–1,15,500
Analysts suggest buying silver in the Rs 1,13,000–1,12,500 range with a stop-loss at Rs 1,11,800, targeting Rs 1,14,200–1,15,500.
