The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued a heat advisory for Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, warning of a sharp rise in temperatures over the next few days due to strong westerly winds in the lower troposphere.
According to the RMC, dry weather will prevail across most of the state this week, with maximum temperatures expected to climb by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius on July 8 and 9. The mercury is likely to peak on July 9, with intense heat and humidity forecast across several districts, IANS reported.
The rise in temperatures is attributed to moderate to strong westerly winds sweeping through the region at lower atmospheric levels.
Madurai records highest temperature; Chennai to sizzle
On Monday, Madurai Airport recorded the state’s highest temperature at 39 degrees Celsius. In contrast, Karur Paramathi reported the day’s lowest. Chennai is also bracing for high temperatures, with forecasts indicating a possible breach of the 38-degree mark.
“Light to moderate rainfall is, however, expected in some parts of the city,” the RMC said.
Scattered rains offer brief relief in hilly regions
Despite the heat wave causing temperatures to soar across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has brought in some rays of hope-light to moderate showers are slated for some regions. The showers are expected to persist in a scattered fashion till the 13th, bringing some relief, especially to the hills and forested zones.
On Monday, Naduvattam in The Nilgiris witnessed 6 cm of rainfall, the highest, followed by Avalanche with 5 cm, and Chinnakallar in Coimbatore district with 4 cm.

The department continues to monitor the weather closely and recommends following official updates for safety guidance.
