Heavy Rain Warning: The India Meteorological Department, commonly known as IMD, on Sunday issued an orange alert for nine districts of Kerala, warning of heavy rains. These districts include Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod. At the same time, a yellow alert has been issued for Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha and Kottayam districts.
In view of the IMD warning, the Kasargod district administration has declared a holiday in all educational institutions on Sunday. This holiday will apply to schools, colleges, professional colleges, Kendriya Vidyalayas, tuition centres, religious study centres, and special classes. However, officials clarified that the exams already scheduled for Sunday would be held as per the pre-scheduled plan.
The IMD has forecast that monsoon activity is likely to intensify across India in the coming days due to the possibility of the formation of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal by July 24. As a result, Kerala is likely to receive extremely heavy rainfall during the next five days, especially in isolated areas, till July 21.
The weather department said that along with heavy rains, strong winds with a speed of 40 to 50 kilometres per hour are likely in different parts of the state till July 22.
As per the IMD classification, an orange alert indicates the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall ranging from 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm within 24 hours. A yellow alert indicates the possibility of heavy rainfall ranging between 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm during the same time period.
Authorities have advised residents of the alerted districts to remain vigilant and avoid going near water bodies or flood-prone areas. Fishermen have also been warned not to venture into the sea due to the possibility of rough conditions.
In view of the possibility of monsoon becoming stronger, disaster management teams and local administration have been put on alert to deal with any emergency. The state government has urged people to keep an eye on weather updates and follow official advisories to ensure their safety.
