Weather Update: Flash floods in Himachal Pradesh's Kinnaur, heavy rain in Delhi-NCR, IMD issues red alert for parts of Telangana

Under the influence of a low-pressure region, Telangana continued to see heavy rain, which paralyzed daily activity and affected road access to certain areas. Heavy rain also lashed several parts of Delhi and the surrounding National Capital Region (NCR). A sudden flash flood hit Hojis Lungpa Nala in Kinnaur on Wednesday evening, August 13.

Himachal Pradesh: Flash flood in Kinnaur sweeps away bridge, one injured

The flood was triggered by a cloudburst in the higher reaches of the Rishi Dogri Valley. The strong flow of water swept away a bridge across the Sutlej River and left one person injured, as per the Indian Army.

The Indian Army stepped in to help, deployed its New Generation Equipment to assist in this operation, which included the Logistics Drone High Altitude (LDHA) system to ferry essential items, including eatables, coconut water across the floodwaters to help sustain the stranded individuals through the night.

Army personnel also guided civilians to safer locations on higher ground and evacuated the injured person to the Regional Hospital in Reckong Peo.

Meanwhile, in Shimla, two cars were damaged near IGMC Hospital after a mudslide caused by heavy rainfall.

Landslides have also been reported at several other locations in the city, adding to the disruption caused by the bad weather.

Kullu District Collector Torul S Ravish said two cloudbursts hit Kullu district, leading to a sudden rise in water levels and prompting swift evacuations in affected areas.

Speaking to ANI on Wednesday, Torul S Ravish said, "Today, cloudbursts occurred at two locations in Kullu. The first was near Bagi Bridge above Bhimdwari, where a sudden rise in water level was reported. The administration swiftly evacuated all downstream areas, preventing any loss of life. While the water level remains high, the final assessment of damage will take time."

Ravish said timely action by the administration prevented any loss of life, as residents in Bhimdwari, Gushaini, and downstream areas were moved to safety amid a yellow alert for August 14 and 15.

"The second incident took place near Pathar, causing a sharp increase in the water level of Tirthan Valley. Gushaini and downstream areas were immediately evacuated, with complete evacuation achieved in Gushaini. It is expected that downstream areas will also remain safe by the time the water reaches them.

These incidents come as the district remains under a yellow alert on August 14 and 15. People are advised to take precautions, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay safe indoors," she added.

Heavy rain pounds parts of Telangana, hits road transport

Rivulets, lakes and ponds were overflowing due to incessant rain, inundating low-lying areas. The low-pressure system has impacted south Telangana with heavy to very heavy rain at a few places, officials said.

United Mahabubnagar, Nalgonda, Adilabad, Khammam and Rangareddy districts received heavy rains since last night.

Maddukur in Bhadradri Kothagudem district received the highest rainfall of 12.7 cm, followed by 12.6 cm in Jadcherla in Mahabubnagar district and 12.4 cm in Pargi in Vikarabad district.

Low-lying colonies in Kodad town in Suryapet district were inundated, while agricultural fields turned into lakes.

In Mahabubnagar, the road leading to the IT Park was damaged due to an overflowing stream nearby.

In Jadcherla, an overflowing tank inundated part of the Hyderabad-Bangalore national highway, disrupting the traffic. Flood water from a stream was flowing over a bridge at Kosgi in Narayanpet district. This brought the traffic between Kosgi and Daultabad to a halt.

Meanwhile, huge inflows from upstream raised the water level in the Nagarjuna Sagar dam across the Krishna River. Authorities have lifted 26 crest gates to release the water. The inflows in the dam on Thursday morning were 2,52,840 cusecs while the outflow was 2,92,826 cusecs.

The water level in the dam was 588.40 feet against the full reservoir level of 590 feet. The water storage was 307.28 TMC against the dam's full capacity of 312.04 TMC.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Medak, Sangareddy, Vikarabad, Medchal Malkajgiri, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Bhupalapally, and Mulugu districts.

Heavy rain lashes parts of Delhi-NCR

Areas including Lajpat Nagar, RK Puram, Lodhi Road, and Delhi-Haryana border witnessed intense showers.

Earlier, heavy rainfall lashed several parts of Delhi on Tuesday. Areas including Minto Bridge, Vijay Chowk, Moti Bagh flyover, Rafi Marg, and Nizamuddin flyover witnessed intense showers.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Tuesday's forecast says "thunderstorm with rain."

Meanwhile, Public infrastructure across Himachal Pradesh remains badly crippled as 323 roads, 70 electricity distribution transformers (DTRs), and 130 water supply schemes were disrupted in the past 24 hours due to heavy rains and related incidents, the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) said on Wednesday evening.

Since the onset of the monsoon on June 20, the state has recorded 241 deaths, of which 126 were linked to rain-related disasters -- including landslides, flash floods, cloudbursts, drowning, lightning strikes, snakebites, electrocution, and falls -- while road accidents caused 115, the SDMA said in its cumulative loss report.

Mandi district reported the highest overall fatalities in rain-linked incidents (26), followed by Kangra (28) and Chamba (9). Road accident deaths were highest in Mandi (21), followed by Chamba (17) and Kangra (11).On the infrastructure front, two national highways -- NH-305 in Kullu and NH-505 in Lahaul-Spiti -- remain blocked due to landslides and road cave-ins. Kullu has 70 roads closed, Mandi 179, and Kangra 25. Mandi also suffered the largest number of power outages, with 50 DTRs down, while Kullu and Lahaul-Spiti reported localised electricity faults.

Water supply has been hit in large swathes of the hill state, with Mandi district alone reporting 72 schemes disrupted. Hamirpur, Lahaul-Spiti, and Kullu also recorded service breakdowns.

The SDMA pegged the cumulative financial loss to public and private property during this monsoon season at over Rs 2,03,000 lakh (Rs 2,031 crore), with the Public Works Department, Jal Shakti Vibhag, and the power sector suffering the brunt of damages.

Authorities have urged residents to remain on alert as weather warnings for heavy rainfall continue, warning that restoration efforts may face further delays if downpours persist.
