ITR Filing 2025: Joint owner of a house with my spouse & don't have any additional property; can I file ITR-1 in AY 2025-26? 

When taxpayers file their income tax return (ITR), several questions come to their mind, like which form should I pick, and how can I save more tax, among others. A little over a month is left to file ITR for the Financial Year 2025, as the last date is September 15, 2025. 

Now, the question is if an individual who is a joint owner of a house with their spouse and doesn't have any additional property can file ITR-1 for Assessment Year 2025-26?

The answer is yes, they can file ITR-1 for the AY 2025-26 in case the following conditions are met: 

  • If they are a single or joint owner of a single property, they can file ITR-1 for AY 2025-26.
  • If they have income from more than one property, they can't file ITR-1 (even as a single owner).

What is ITR-1?

There are seven types of ITR forms, and ITR-1 is one of them. It is also called 'Sahaj'. Taxpayers whose income is up to Rs 50 lakh per annum from salaries, one house property, other sources like interest long-term capital gains under Section 112A up to Rs 1.25 lakh, and agriculture income up to Rs 5,000 can use the ITR-1 form to file their return.

What documents do I need to file ITR-1?

You would need to download AIS and keep copies of Form 16, house rent receipt (if applicable), investment payment, and premium receipts (if applicable). 

Is there any change in the house property schedule for ITR-1?

From AY 2025-26, the new schedule Section 24(b): Interest on borrowed capital is added. In this schedule taxpayer must furnish below details:

  • Loan taken from
  • Name of the institution or bank
  • Loan account number
  • Date of sanction of loan
  • Total amount of loan
  • Loan outstanding as on date
  • Interest amount
