ITR Filing: Only one week left to file your income tax return; here's why you should not wait for the deadline

Only one week left to file your income tax return (ITR) for the financial year 2025. Even if there is not much time for the ITR deadline, a large number of taxpayers are yet to file their ITR. According to the official data, over 4.56 crore people have filed their ITRs, out of which more than 4.33 crore have also e-verified their returns as of September 4, 2025. The I-T Department has processed around 3.17 crore ITRs so far.

In the last week, more than 3 crore income tax return filers are left to file their return.

Why you should not wait for the ITR deadline

Many of the taxpayers are waiting for an extension to file their ITR. But they should not expect to get more time; rather, they should file their return before the deadline.

If a taxpayer waits for the deadline to file their ITR, they may face the following issues:

1- If you file your ITR late, your refund will also be delayed if there is any.
2- If you file your ITR on the last day, there are chances of facing a technical glitch on the I-T website. In that case, you will end up paying a penalty if cross the deadline.
3- Filing your ITR on time can also help in the easy approval of loans and visa processing.

Deadlines for different taxpayers:

15 September 2025: For individuals/HUFs/AOPs/BOIs who don't require audit
31 October 2025: For taxpayers whose accounts require audit
31 November 2025: For cases requiring transfer pricing reports
31 December 2025: Belated/revised returns with penalty
31 March 2030: Deadline for updated returns under the Finance Act
