Engineering major Larsen & Toubro has won a big contract from Hindustan Zinc to help expand its smelting operations at Debari, near Udaipur. The job involves building a new zinc processing plant on a turnkey basis and is expected to significantly boost the company’s production capacity.

The order, placed with L&T’s Minerals & Metals division, is classified as “large,” which means it’s valued somewhere between Rs 2,000 and Rs 5,000 crore. Exact figures weren't made public.

Under the project scope, L&T will set up a 250,000-ton-per-year Leaching, Purification and Cellhouse facility, as well as a 125,000-ton Jarosite Circuit. Once operational, the plant will produce high-purity zinc cathodes with 99.995% metal content used in various industrial and galvanizing applications.

Work will cover everything from design and procurement to installation and commissioning. The company will also handle auxiliary systems such as water treatment, plant electrics, instrumentation, and automation.

“This is a strong endorsement of our long-standing relationship with Hindustan Zinc,” said T. Kumaresan, who heads L&T’s minerals and metals business. “We’re proud to support them again as they scale up.”

The two companies have worked together for over 30 years, across various beneficiation and smelter projects. L&T’s manufacturing units in Odisha and Tamil Nadu are expected to support this project with made-in-India equipment.

Hindustan Zinc is part of the Vedanta Group and one of the world’s largest zinc producers. With demand for refined metals growing, the Debari expansion is a key part of its broader push to increase capacity.

L&T, meanwhile, continues to strengthen its hold in the industrial EPC space. The company operates in over 30 countries and reported revenues of $30 billion last year.
