Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently inaugurated the MEMU service train (08121) virtually for the Purulia–Howrah route under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme during his visit to Santragachi Junction. The minister inspected several railway stations undergoing redevelopment as part of the scheme.
The MEMU train (08121) operates between Purulia and Howrah via Bankura and Masagram, covering a total distance of 283 kilometres.
Passengers can travel on this route for Rs 60, compared to Rs 65 charged on the longer Kharagpur route. The new alignment saves 41 kilometres of travel, according to the government.
According to Indian Railways, this service strengthens east-west connectivity within West Bengal and offers a fast, affordable, and efficient travel option for thousands of passengers, including office-goers, students, and traders.
Here is a summary of the MEMU train details:
- Route: Purulia – Bankura – Masagram – Howrah
- Total Covering Distance: 283 km
- Fare: Rs 60 (compared to Rs 65 via Kharagpur route)
- Distance Saved: 41 km
During the inauguration, Vaishnaw said that this MEMU service not only revives a vital rail link but also honours the legacy of the historic Bankura–Damodar Railway. It is a proud moment for all of us as people of Purulia, Bankura, and Howrah will now benefit from cleaner, faster, and more accessible rail services.
He further stated, “Where once there was a long list of incomplete projects, today we see rapid progress. In West Bengal alone, work is underway at 101 stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme."
“PM Narendra Modi’s visionary leadership has laid the foundation for a new Indian Railways, and we are working tirelessly to realise that vision. More than 1.2 million members of the Indian Railways family are serving with full dedication and commitment," Vaishnav said.
