Domestic equity benchmarks registered mild gains on Wednesday amid buying in financial and automobile shares, as investors weighed corporate earnings while easing inflation supported hopes of more rate cuts, though investors globally weighed the potential impact of US tariffs on growth.
Among index heavyweights, stocks like HDFC Bank, Bharti Airtel and Eternal were the biggest contributors to the gains in both main gauges.
Official data released the previous day showed domestic consumer inflation hit an eight-year low of 1.55 per cent in July, comfortably below the RBI's tolerance band of 2-6 per cent.
