Robert Gwerengwe takes reins at Wesbank

WesBank has appointed Robert Gwerengwe as its new CEO, effective Monday, 1 September, the lender announced in a statement.

Gwerengwe, currently CEO of DirectAxis and head of FNB’s Personal Sub-Segment cluster, succeeds Ghana Msibi, who has been appointed CEO of FNB Business.

WesBank described Gwerengwe as a “seasoned leader” with more than 19 years’ experience within the FirstRand Group.

In his new role, he will be responsible for driving strategic growth at WesBank, ensuring it maintains its leadership position in vehicle and asset finance for individuals and businesses, the group said.

Gwerengwe has held a number of executive roles within FNB’s retail banking segment, as well as at DirectAxis and UK-based motor finance provider MotoNovo, where he oversaw strategy, financial performance and growth.

He holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the Quantic School of Business and Technology in the United States, a BCom in Finance and Computer Science from Rhodes University, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Management from the University of Cape Town.
