Ryan Phillippe Reacts to Rumor Ex Reese Witherspoon Got Him ‘IKWYDLS’ Role

Ryan Phillippe sees those I Know What You Did Last Summer rumors, — and thinks they’re “cute,” but false.

On Saturday, July 19, Prime Video’s Instagram page shared a clip of Phillippe, 50, in the 1997 teen horror flick, writing, “Reese Witherspoon auditioned for I Know What You Did Last Summer but changed her mind and withdrew. Instead, she recommended her then-boyfriend, Ryan Phillippe for the role of Barry.”

“Not sure that story is truuuuuue, but it’s very cute.😊,” Phillippe responded in the comments section.

Prime Video’s declaration most likely stems from director Jim Gillespie’s interview with Digital Spy in 2017, in which he said Witherspoon, now 49, was actually in mind to play Julie before she backed out and he ultimately cast Jennifer Love Hewitt in the role.

“We actually had made an offer to Reese Witherspoon first off,” he said. “Reese came in and met us, but ultimately didn’t want to do it. But she pointed us to Ryan, funnily enough. They were dating at this time. We asked her who the hottest guy was, in her opinion, and she said Ryan Phillippe.”

Witherspoon and Phillippe met at her 21st birthday in March 1997, before they starred in Cruel Intentions together in 1999. They became engaged in December 1998 and married in June 1999.

They share two children— daughter Ava, 25, and son Deacon, 21. They separated in 2006 and finally their divorce in 2007.

“When we got together we were so young,” Phillippe said on Larry King Live in 2015, explaining that “age” was more the factor in their split than the business. “I think it can create issues with two people in this industry because there’s so much noise that goes along with it. But, I wouldn’t [say that was the cause].”

Phillippe insisted they were “very much friends” and were raising their kids together as coparents. Witherspoon echoed those sentiments in a 2017 interview on Lorraine, saying age definitely played a factor in their divorce.

“I got married when I was 23 and I had two kids by the time I was 27. So, I think, I don’t know. Sometimes it’s good to know yourself,” she explained. “I would never change anything. I said to my daughter, ‘25 you start to know yourself a little bit better.’”

The duo grew up alongside fellow ‘90s and 2000s stars like Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze Jr. and Hewitt, 46, who also recently opened up about some false reports concerning her own experience with I Know What You Did Last Summer.

She spoke out about ongoing speculation of a feud between her and costar Gellar, 48, in an interview with Vulture published on Friday, July 18.

“I honestly don’t even know what that was or how that all came to be. I just think people don’t want the narrative to be easy,” Hewitt said. “Why do we always have to be against each other and out for each other?”

After they didn’t pose together at the premiere of the new I Know What You Did Last Summer last week, Gellar insisted she “was inside with my kids when the big carpet happened. And unfortunately, JLH didn’t come to the afterparty. If you have ever been to one of these, it’s crazy.”

Hewitt added to Vulture: “I haven’t seen Sarah. Literally, we’ve not talked since I  saw her at 18 years old when the first movie came out. That’s why it’s so funny to me. People were like, ‘Say something back.’ And I’m like, ‘What am I going to say? I’ve not seen her.’ On my side, we’re good. I have no idea where this is coming from.”

I Know What You Did Last Summer director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson also debunked fan theories that Prinze Jr., 49, and Hewitt filmed all of their scenes for the new sequel separately.

“[Hewitt and Prinze] absolutely shot their scenes together. hope this helps,” Kaytin Robinson, 37, clarified via X on Saturday, July 19.
