General Hospital has bid farewell to another character — Sofia Mattsson’s Sasha Gilmore — after seven years, Us Weekly can confirm.

“There was a good time in the story line for Sofia to leave to pursue other opportunities in film and TV,” a rep for the show told TV Insider on Friday, July 18, teasing, “But she is open for a return in the future.”

General Hospital’s Friday episode marked Mattsson’s last appearance after making her debut as Sasha in 2018.

During the episode, Sasha left Port Charles with baby Daisy to live with her parents, Holly Sutton (Emma Samms) and Robert Scorpio (Tristan Rogers). Once there, Sasha reflected on her time in Port Charles, giving fans a trip down memory lane as well.

“It was emotional for sure,” Mattsson, 34, told the outlet of her last day on set. “Cleaning out my room and knowing that I wouldn’t see all my friends there like usual every other day felt sad. But everyone was so supportive and excited for me.”

The actress noted that she has some “exciting new projects in the works,” but leaving General Hospital is still “bittersweet.”

Mattsson’s goodbye might not be permanent as she is open to returning to the soap opera space in time. “I’d have to see what the role was, but I’m definitely not opposed to coming back to the soap world,” she shared. “I think being on a soap is one of the best jobs you can have as an actress.”

Executive producer Frank Valentini told TV Insider that Mattsson will be missed. “I love Sofia, she is a great actress and a dear friend,” he said. “We will miss her, but we wish her the best in all of her future endeavors.”

While those next steps have yet to be revealed, Mattsson hopes her fans know how much they meant to her each season.

“You guys are the best!” she said in a message to her fans. “I’m in awe of your commitment, and I’m so honored to have gotten to experience your love and support firsthand.”

Mattsson’s exit comes a few weeks after costar Kirsten Storms announced her temporary departure. Storms, 41, shared via Instagram on July 7 that after playing Maxie Jones for two decades she was taking a prolonged break while relocating to Nashville.

“It’s possible I will be back in December, maybe November,” Storms explained. “I promise you the story line they have going on until my return to Port Charles is kind of incredible. You guys are gonna freak out actually.”

General Hospital airs on ABC weekdays.
