GST 2.0 reshapes car taxation, EVs remain at 5%

Under the new GST 2.0 framework, all internal combustion engine (ICE) cars will now fall under either the 18 per cent or 40 per cent tax slab.

Smaller vehicles such as hatchbacks, compact sedans, and compact SUVs are placed in the 18 per cent category, while mid-size, larger, and luxury models will attract a higher 40 per cent levy. Earlier, ICE cars were charged 28 per cent GST along with an additional compensation cess of 1 per cent to 22 per cent, depending on engine size and vehicle length.

For electric vehicles, the GST rate remains unchanged at 5 per cent, while hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCEVs) have been brought down from 12 per cent to 5 per cent.
