The Trump administration has proposed a new immigration rule aimed at restricting the duration of stay for certain categories of non-immigrant visa holders, including foreign students, professors, physicians, and international media representatives.
Under the proposal, students and exchange visitors would be allowed an authorized stay of up to four years, with extensions subject to strict review by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
For foreign media representatives, the rule caps the initial admission period at 240 days, with the possibility of extending for an additional 240 days, provided the assignment remains temporary.
Officials said the new regulation would standardize admission and extension procedures, requiring applicants to seek formal approval for longer stays and undergo DHS assessments.
