Watch how this Singaporean artist uses AI to honor the ‘often misunderstood’ auntie

The “auntie” is a stock character throughout Asia: an older woman, sometimes stigmatized for being annoying for nagging the younger generations about looks and behavior.

“An auntie can be very critical and sometimes conflicted,” artist Niceaunties said at the Fortune Brainstorm AI Singapore conference last week. “For instance, my auntie will call me fat, and then she will feed me more food.”

The “auntie” is complex. “She’s funny creative, quirky, and often misunderstood, but she shows her love in a multitude of ways,” she adds.

Niceaunties uses AI to generate videos in the “auntieverse,” a series of videos and art installations that highlight older women, aging, and body image. “The auntieverse is my way of honoring their everyday labor and to question my own attitude about aging,” she said.

Watch Niceaunties on the mainstage of Fortune Brainstorm AI Singapore, and how she wants to challenge standard views of beauty and aging through her AI-powered celebration of the “auntie.”
