The Chennai-based Regional Meteorological Centre, on Sunday, issued an important weather advisory, predicting widespread rainfall over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal as a weather disturbance persists over South India.
According to the statement, due to atmospheric circulation, light to moderate rainfall along with thunderstorms are likely over parts of northern and southern Tamil Nadu.
The neighbouring Union Territory of Puducherry, including the Karaikal region, is also likely to receive rain during the day.
The weather office said districts like Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Tiruchirapalli, Ariyalur, and Perambalur may receive heavy rainfall at one or two places.
Similar conditions are likely in Puducherry. In southern Tamil Nadu, isolated heavy rains are expected in Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Nagapattinam.
There may also be rain in the hilly areas of Coimbatore.
Additionally, heavy rains are likely in isolated areas over Nilgiris, Theni, Dindigul and Madurai districts as well as Ranipet, Vellore, Chengalpattu and Kanchipuram.
The Meteorological Department said that the intensity of rain may increase in the next 48 hours, and the possibility of thunderstorms and lightning may increase in different parts of the state.
Fishermen have been advised to exercise caution as the weather may turn bad in coastal areas.
The sky in Chennai will remain partly cloudy throughout the day. Intermittent moderate rain with thunder and lightning is likely in some parts of the city, especially during the evening and night hours.
Although the rain is expected to provide some relief from the heat, the possibility of waterlogging in low-lying areas cannot be ruled out, the weather department warned.
Officials have urged residents of vulnerable districts to remain alert and avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rains.
The advisory also stressed that the district administration has been alerted to be prepared for possible disruption in transport and daily activities if the rains intensify.
As the monsoon remains active, Tamil Nadu may witness varied weather conditions this week, with light to heavy rains expected in different areas.
