Weather Update: IMD issues red alert for Jharkhand, orange for Himachal Pradesh and yellow for Srinagar; predicts rain and thunderstorms in Delhi-NCR

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert and an orange alert for Jharkhand and Himachal Pradesh, respectively. The weather office has also predicted light rain and thunderstorms in Delhi-NCR. 

Schools closed in Jharkhand

Due to a 'heavy to very heavy' rain alert, the schools are closed in Jharkhand. The state is likely to receive heavy rains till July 17.

School authorities were asked to conduct online classes to avert any disruption of studies, according to an order issued by deputy commissioner Karn Satyarthi.

Extremely heavy rainfall is expected to happen Saraikela-Kharswan, East Singhbhum, and West Singhbhum districts.

The weather department has issued an orange alert for Gumla, Khunti, and Simdega districts.

Orange alert for Himachal Pradesh

Meanwhile, IMD has issued an orange alert for Himachal Pradesh as rain continues to lash. As per the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), a total of 105 lives were lost between June 20 and July 14, 2025. 

Out of 105 deaths, 61 deaths were directly caused by rain-related calamities, including landslides, flash floods, cloudbursts, drowning, fire incidents, and electrocution, as per the official cumulative report released by the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC) under the Department of Revenue.

Additionally, 44 people lost their lives in road accidents, which have sharply increased due to the slippery terrain, poor visibility, and road damage caused by relentless rainfall.

The worst-hit district remains Mandi, accounting for 17 rain-related deaths, followed by Kangra with 14 and Hamirpur with 7. Other fatalities occurred in Kullu, Bilaspur, Una, Shimla, Chamba, and Kinnaur districts.

Yellow alert in Srinagar 

IMD has issued a 'yellow' alert for Srinagar with a warning 'thunderstorm accompanied with lightning' for today and tomorrow.

According to IMD, the forecast for Tuesday is 'Partly cloudy sky with possibility of rain or Thunderstorm or Duststorm', whereas the forecast for tomorrow is 'generally cloudy ' with a possibility of rain, Thunderstorm, or Duststorm. The temperature for both days will be 30 degrees with 18 degrees of humidity.

West Bengal rains

Three people, including a 7-year-old school girl, lost their lives in severe flooding in parts of Ghatal due to heavy rainfall in West Bengal's Paschim Medinipur district, an official said.

Light rain, thunderstorms in Delhi-NCR

IMD has issued a yellow alert for Delhi-NCR for light to moderate rain.
