Weather Update (September 2): Orange alert in Gurugram; schools closed, heavy rains in Uttarakhand, Punjab & other regions

A heavy to very-heavy rainfall is expected in Gurugram on Tuesday, September 2. Gurugram District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has issued an advisory urging people to work from home, and schools have been instructed to conduct online classes. The weather office has issued an orange alert.

The advisory read, "In view of the forecast, all corporate offices and private institutions in the district are advised to guide their employees to work from home; and all schools in the district are advised to conduct online classes on 02-09-2025".

In a post on X, Gurugram Deputy Commissioner wrote, "Gurugram received more than 100 mm of rainfall on Monday between 3:00 PM and 7:00 PM, and the Weather Department issued an Orange Alert on 2nd September 2025 - heavy to very-heavy rainfall expected".

"The district administration appeals to the public to exercise caution, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow all official instructions in view of the prevailing weather conditions", the post read.

Punjab: PSDM centres to be closed until September 3

The Punjab government has ordered the closure of all 43 centres associated with the Punjab Skill Development Mission (PSDM) until September 3, citing inclement weather conditions and prevailing flood-like situations in the state.

Punjab Minister Aman Arora shared a post on his official 'X' handle, informing about the development.

"In view of the inclement weather conditions and prevailing flood-like situations, all 43 Skill Development Centres-- running in association with PSDM-- will remain closed till September 3, 2025 to ensure the safety & well-being of all the stakeholders.CM Bhagwant Mann Govt is committed to ensure safety of people and their assets," the 'X' post said.

Earlier on September 1, Punjab Minister Harpal Singh Cheema urged the Union government to release Rs 60,000 crore in pending funds, citing the grave flood situation that has devastated large parts of the state.

Tamil Nadu: IMD warns for coastal areas

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, has forecast the formation of a low-pressure area over the north Bay of Bengal in the coming days, a development that is expected to influence weather patterns across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and adjoining regions.

According to the RMC, changes in wind patterns are likely to bring light to moderate rain to isolated places in northern and southern Tamil Nadu, as well as Puducherry and Karaikal areas.

Thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 kmph are also expected in some districts. The weather office has further cautioned that maximum temperatures across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry could rise by up to 3 degrees Celsius above normal levels over the next five days.

Moderate rainfall is forecast in parts of the state until September 7.

In Chennai and its suburbs, skies are likely to remain partly cloudy. The city may experience light to moderate rain with thunderstorms at isolated locations.

Uttarakhand: Heavy rain disrupts normal life

Heavy rain disrupted normal life in Khatima city in Udham Singh Nagar district of Uttarakhand. The downpour in the last three days flooded low-lying areas, causing major traffic snarls and waterlogging.

The city also witnessed heavy rain this morning. The floodwater entered the houses in the low-lying areas of the city. Office goers in the morning endured considerable difficulties due to the heavy rain and traffic snarls.

All districts of Uttarakhand are currently under either a red alert or an orange alert.

"Every district in Uttarakhand has been affected by the disaster. There is calamity at Dharali. In Rudraprayag, many places have been hit by the disaster. In Uttarkashi, Bageshwar, Pithoragarh, Udham Singh Nagar and Haridwar, many places are waterlogged. A cloudburst has occurred in Dehri's Ghansali region also," Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami told reporters in Khatima on Monday.

Delhi: Traffic to be halted near Loha Pul

Authorities in Delhi have directed that traffic and public movement near Loha Pul will be stopped from 5 PM on Tuesday after the Yamuna River crossed its danger mark of 205.33 metres following heavy rainfall across the National Capital Region (NCR).

The order was issued in response to a flood advisory from the Central Water Commission (CWC).

The Shahdara District Magistrate announced the restrictions, warning that the water level at the Old Railway Bridge (ORB) may exceed 206.50 metres.

According to the order, "As the water level of ORB (Delhi Old Railway Bridge) may cross the danger level and is likely to exceed 206.50 m, a CWC advisory may be expected soon. So, all the Sector Officers are hereby advised to keep a strict vigil in their respective areas and to take necessary action at vulnerable points, such as people residing within the river embankments, shall be warned and shifted to safer places."

It further said, "The police and the staff of 1&FC Department would undertake patrolling along the right and left marginal embankments and keep vigil round the clock on the vulnerable points, regulators/pumps, etc. as required."
