Weather Update (September 5): Heavy rains batter several states; IMD warns of more showers this weekend

The monsoon maintained its grip across multiple states on Friday, with the IMD issuing a red alert for Gujarat and forecasting more heavy rain in Rajasthan, Odisha and Maharashtra. 

Delhi and its adjoining districts remained on edge as the Yamuna stayed above the danger mark, while Punjab and Himachal Pradesh continued to grapple with widespread flood devastation. 

The IMD has forecast more showers in the coming days for parts of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Uttarakhand, Delhi and the North-east.

Uttar Pradesh weather update

Heavy rainfall lashed several districts of Uttar Pradesh, including Lucknow, Prayagraj, Kanpur and Gorakhpur. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for the state, warning of moderate to heavy rainfall in isolated areas over the next 48 hours. In eastern UP, Gorakhpur and surrounding districts recorded above 50 mm of rainfall in 24 hours. Lucknow too witnessed heavy showers, disrupting traffic during peak hours. Authorities have advised residents in low-lying areas to remain cautious.

Uttarakhand weather update

Uttarakhand witnessed intense spells of rain in Dehradun, Nainital and Pauri. The weather department has warned of landslides and flash floods in sensitive hilly areas due to continuous downpours. The Char Dham yatra routes are being closely monitored, with traffic movement restricted in some stretches as a precaution. The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated areas of Kumaon and Garhwal regions till Saturday.

Delhi-NCR weather update

Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) were lashed by heavy rains on Friday, bringing down temperatures and providing relief from sultry weather. Safdarjung, the city’s base station, recorded nearly 40 mm of rainfall in 24 hours. The IMD said moderate rainfall is likely to continue in the city over the next two days. Waterlogging was reported from Minto Bridge, ITO and other low-lying areas, while traffic slowed on major stretches such as Ring Road and N-48.

Bihar weather update

The IMD has predicted heavy rain in north Bihar, particularly in districts bordering Nepal, which may cause rivers to swell. Disaster management authorities said they were monitoring the situation closely as continuous rains may impact flood-prone areas along the Gandak and Kosi rivers.

Gujarat weather update

The IMD has placed Gujarat under a red alert, warning of extremely heavy rainfall between September 5 and 6. The Saurashtra and Kutch regions are expected to see heavy to very heavy showers from September 6 to 7 as a low-pressure system intensifies over Rajasthan and adjoining Gujarat.

Rajasthan weather update

Several parts of Rajasthan were lashed by heavy showers on Friday. Sikrai in Dausa district recorded 104 mm of rain in 24 hours. Heavy rainfall was also reported in Udaipur, Bundi, and Banswara. The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rain across the state over the next four days. A yellow alert has been issued for Sirohi, Nagaur, Pali, and Tonk. The state government has deployed ministers to assess crop losses and damage in affected regions.

Odisha weather update

Heavy rain battered Odisha on Friday, prompting the weather office to extend its warning till September 7. Balasore, Bhadrak, Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, and Bolangir are among the worst affected, with Balasore witnessing waterlogging at the district hospital, shopping complexes, and residential areas. Inclement weather also forced the diversion of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi’s flight to Kolkata before it later landed safely in Bhubaneswar.

Haryana weather update

Ambala district faced widespread waterlogging as the Markanda, Tangri, and Ghaggar rivers crossed danger levels. Residential areas in both Ambala City and Cantonment were inundated, prompting evacuation and relief efforts. Though river levels began to recede on Friday, they remained well above safe limits.

Punjab weather update

Punjab is reeling from one of its most severe floods in decades. The swollen Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi rivers have submerged villages across all 23 districts, displacing over 3.5 lakh people and killing at least 30. Schools, colleges, and universities across the state will remain closed until September 7. Relief and rescue operations are being carried out by the NDRF, Army, BSF, and state police.

Himachal Pradesh weather update

Himachal Pradesh remains the hardest hit by this year’s monsoon, with the State Disaster Management Authority reporting 355 deaths since June 20. Of these, 194 were due to weather-related incidents such as landslides, flash floods, and cloudbursts, while 161 were from road accidents during rains. Over 3,700 crore worth of damage has been reported to public infrastructure, including roads, power lines, and water systems. More than 1,000 homes and animal shelters have been destroyed. The IAF has been airlifting stranded pilgrims from the Manimahesh Yatra route in Chamba.
