Phoebe Cates chooses to stay out of the spotlight these days, but her husband, Kevin Kline, can’t help but gush about their private marriage.

The stars wed in 1989 and share two children, Greta and Owen. After more than 30 years of marriage, Kline reflected on the longevity of their tight-knit bond.

“If your marriage lasts more than six months, you’re already in the Guinness Book of World Records, if you’re a Hollywood marriage,” the actor told Business Insider in September 2024.

Who Is Kevin Kline?

Kline is an award-winning actor who made his film debut in 1982’s Sophie’s Choice. He won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in A Fish Called Wanda in 1989. Some of Kline’s other notable film and TV roles include Silverado, In & Out, Wild Wild West and more.

He has also taken his talents to Broadway, earning Tony Awards for his work in On the Twentieth Century, The Pirates of Penzance and Present Laughter. Cates, for her part, most recently acted in 2001’s The Anniversary Party and voiced a character in the Lego Dimensions video game in 2015.

How Did Phoebe Cates and Kevin Kline Meet?

Their passion for acting led them to find each other. Cates, who was fresh off of her breakout role in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, and Kline met when they were both auditioning for 1983’s The Big Chill. He ended up getting a role in the film, but she did not. However, they both got something far greater from the experience — love.

When Did Phoebe Cates and Kevin Kline Get Married?

Cates and Kline tied the knot in 1989 in New York. Three years later, their son, Owen, was born. Their daughter, Greta, arrived in 1994.

Nearly a decade after walking down the aisle, Kline shared the secret to what keeps their relationship going strong.

“We have agreed to alternate so that we’re never working at the same time,” Kline told Playboy in 1998. “[But] whenever it’s been her slot to work, Phoebe has chosen to stay with the children.”

He added, “We’re both sensible, and we don’t separate for long periods of time. We take care of the marriage.”

The couple now live on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, where Cates owns and operates a boutique.

“She’s got her head on her shoulders, unlike me. I usually have my head on her shoulders too. She’s a great wife, a great mother, great person and she keeps me honest,” Kline told Business Insider of their marriage. “Except for in interviews.”
