There are many ways of earning money through farming. You can start with organic crop production, herb gardening, and mushroom farming, among others. But these days, it's not easy to make money through farming due to unstable weather challenges, market prices, and others. However, in this article, we will talk about an everyday commodity farming that can earn you a good profit every year.

"India started coffee farming in the 1600s when legendary holy saint Baba Budan brought seven Mocha seeds to the hills of Karnataka. Over the centuries, the cultivation of coffee in India has evolved from a humble practice to a thriving industry, with the country's coffee now widely loved across the globe. India is now the seventh-largest coffee producer globally, with exports reaching $1.29 billion in FY 2023-24, almost double the $719.42 million in 2020-21," according to data available on PIB.

In the first half of January 2025, India exported over 9,300 tonnes of coffee, with top buyers including Italy, Belgium, and Russia.

What are the main types of coffee grown in India?

There are two main types of coffee grown in India- Arabica and Robusta.

Arabica: A mild, aromatic flavour. Arabica is called the 'queen' of coffee. It is grown in cold and high altitudes (altitude of about 1000 to 1500 meters).

Robusta: Robusta is a strong, bold-tasting coffee and has higher caffeine content.

How much money can you earn if you produce coffee on a two-acre land?

Let's assume that if 900 to 1000 coffee plants are planted in two acres of land, then one coffee plant will be ready in about 4-5 years, and then it can keep giving you fruit for the next 40-50 years.

About one kg of coffee beans can be obtained from one plant every year. That means you have every possibility of getting 900-1000 kg of coffee beans every year from one acre. Depending on the quality, the price of coffee beans in the market can range from about Rs 300 to Rs 800 per kg or even more.

This means if the average price is Rs 500 per kg for coffee beans, then you can easily earn up to Rs 5,00,000 every year.

How is the government supporting coffee farming?

To encourage farmers to cultivate coffee, the 'Coffee Board' of the Government of India provides support in this. The board provides a subsidy for planting coffee plants, purchasing irrigation equipment, and other needs.
