Telecom stocks including Bharti Airtel, Reliance Industries, and Vodafone Idea are likely to be in focus this week after the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) released mobile subscription data for May 2025, showing mixed trends across operators.
According to TRAI, Bharti Airtel added 2.75 lakh users during the month, marking a 0.07 per cent increase month-on-month. The stock ended June 27 at Rs 2,020, up Rs 5.70 or 0.28 per cent, with traders likely to track follow-through moves as the Street weighs growth in high-ARPU segments.
Reliance Jio led net additions, gaining 27 lakh subscribers, up 0.57 per cent from April. The data reinforces Jio’s dominant position in the market and may support sentiment around Reliance Industries, especially ahead of its June quarter earnings. Jio’s rural reach, bundling strategies, and ongoing 5G expansion are seen as key growth drivers.
On the other hand, Vodafone Idea lost 2.74 lakh users, a 0.1 per cent decline month-on-month, continuing its trend of subscriber erosion. The telecom operator has struggled to arrest its market share loss amid funding delays and operational challenges.
State-run MTNL reported the sharpest drop, losing 4.71 lakh subscribers, a decline nearly six times greater than the previous month, reflecting structural weakness and minimal competitive activity.
Overall, the industry added 21 lakh mobile users in May, a 7.7 per cent rise over April, with Reliance and Airtel accounting for nearly all the gains.
Market participants are expected to watch for upcoming quarterly results and any commentary on potential tariff hikes or ARPU improvements, which could serve as key near-term triggers for the sector.
