Danny Masterson and Bijou Phillips wed in 2011 after meeting at a celebrity poker tournament two years prior.
In March 2017, Masterson — who welcomed daughter Fianna with Phillips in 2014 — was accused of sexual assault in the early 2000s by multiple women. As a result, he was written off from Netflix’s The Ranch. He denied the claims at the time.
Masterson, who is a member of the Church of Scientology, was later arrested and charged on three counts of rape in June 2020. After being released on a $3.3 million bail, he pleaded not guilty to all charges.
“Bijou has been a total rock,” a source exclusively told Us in January 2022 before Masterson’s criminal trial began that August. “She fully supports him and says they’ll get through this nightmare together and come out stronger.”
The court proceedings concluded the following November, resulting in a mistrial after the jury failed to reach a unanimous verdict. Masterson’s retrial began in April 2023 — and he was found guilty the following month. He was sentenced to 30 years to life in prison that September, with Phillips reportedly in attendance.
Less than two weeks after Masterson’s sentencing, Phillips filed for divorce following more than 10 years of marriage.
Scroll below to see Masterson and the actress’ relationship timeline through the years:
After meeting at a celebrity poker game, the twosome started dating. “Every guy at the table was flirting with me but Danny,” Phillips recalled to Paper magazine in 2009. “He wasn’t laughing at my jokes. I was like, ‘Who is this Danny Masterson and what does he think he’s doing?’”
Masterson confessed at the time that he only knew his now-wife by reputation only, calling her a “little crazy girl.” He continued: ““After Vegas, and talking to her a few times, I was shocked by how unbelievably intelligent she was. She knew every book I had ever read. I was like, this girl is amazing.”
After six years of dating, Phillips revealed to Us Weekly if she saw an engagement and wedding in their future.
“It's not a yes; it's not a no. It just sort of is, you know?” she shared before teasing her best relationship tips. “I don’t know. We just do. I wish I [had more advice]. This is my hidden tip — not talking.”
Bijou, who had been privately battling kidney disease for several years, underwent a transplant in April. Masterson, for his part, assisted her recovery progress.
“My lady has been slowing dying for the past 7 years of an incurable kidney disease. She was given the gift of an encore by a tall angel,” he wrote via Instagram after the surgery. “Our daughter will have a mother. We do not take lightly how incredibly fortunate we are. 100% successful transplant. Now the real work begins for her to silence any chance of rejection. Our deepest gratitude to a perfect transplant team. And a life owed to a tall drink of water. Sláinte!”
As the Urge actor awaited his initial trial, a source told Us that Bijou was “his rock.”
“Even with [Bijou’s] support, a legal team he trusts implicitly and all that money in the bank, there’s no denying he’s walking around with this horrendous cloud hanging over him,” the insider said at the time of Masterson. “Once in a while, he heads out — dressed down and as incognito as possible — to fetch Starbucks or head to a meeting with his business team or lawyers. But 99 percent of the time, it’s Bijou running errands, doing the shopping and taking care of their daughter.”
When Masterson was found guilty of rape, Phillips let out a “pained cry” and “began sobbing" when verdict was read, per the L.A. Times.
Masterson was sentenced to 30 years to life behind bars in his sexual assault retrial. “Mr. Masterson, you are not the victim here. Your actions 20 years ago took away another person’s choice and voice,” the judge told the actor during his sentencing. “Your actions 20 years ago today were criminal, and that’s why you are here.”
Phillips was reportedly in attendance alongside more of her husband’s family members, according to Variety. A courtroom sketch also showed Masterson blowing his wife a kiss during his sentencing.
Us confirmed Phillips filed for divorce from Masterson on September 18, two weeks after the actor was sentenced to 30 years to life in his sexual assault retrial.
"Ms. Phillips has decided to file for divorce from her husband during this unfortunate time. Her priority remains with her daughter," Phillips' attorney Lauzon Paluch told TMZ at the time. "This period has been unimaginably hard on the marriage and the family. Mr. Masterson was always present for Ms. Phillips during her most difficult times of her life. Ms. Phillips acknowledges that Mr. Masterson is a wonderful father to their daughter."
