The number of people who have died in floods in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province has risen to 57 and includes several school children, who drowned when the minibus taxi they were traveling in was swamped.
The extreme weather conditions have also displaced a number of people and damaged infrastructure, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, a minister in the presidency, told reporters on Thursday after a meeting of the cabinet. Emergency teams have been sent to affected areas to support local officials with rescue efforts.
The “cabinet cautions everyone to be vigilant over the next few days due to the expected weather conditions in most parts of the country,” she said. “This could include drops in temperature, snowfall, strong winds an heavy rains.”
