Denise Richards, Brooke Mueller's Marriage Revelations in Charlie Sheen Doc

Charlie Sheen’s Netflix documentary included brutally honest revelations from his famous ex-wives Denise Richards and Brooke Mueller.

Aka Charlie Sheen, which premiered on Wednesday, September 10, featured separate interviews with Richards, 54, and Mueller, 48, where they addressed the highs and lows of being with Sheen, 60. Richards and Sheen’s youngest daughter, Lola, 20, and Mueller and Sheen’s son Bob, 16, also made appearances.

“There’s supporting players here that are more important in the story than myself,” Sheen said in the doc about amplifying other people’s experiences with him.

Richards was married to Sheen from 2002 to 2006. After their split, Sheen moved on with Mueller in 2008, and the couple welcomed twin sons before divorcing in 2011. Sheen and Mueller have both been vocal about struggling with addiction issues.

Why Denise Wanted to Participate

“There’s a lot of stuff that I know and was privy to — and Charlie knows that I am — and I want to be honest,” she told the cameras. “Peel the layers and be honest because otherwise this movie is going to be a fluffy, glossed-over and sugar-coated piece of s***.”

Appearing in the doc allowed Richards to tell the audience about a side of Sheen that most didn’t get to see. She recalled how “shy” he was when they met before sharing details about their surprising first date — watching a baseball game at home.

“We microwaved our plastic meals. I brought mine that I had delivered from my delivery service. He had his. He was on The Zone Diet. I was on a different one,” she said. “It was very romantic.”

Sheen noted that he was “still sober” at the time and didn’t make the first move because he wanted to be respectful of Richards. The actress confirmed they “didn’t have sex” on the first date because there was “such a connection” between them.

How Others Saw Denise and Charlie’s Marriage

According to Sheen’s Two and a Half Men costar Jon Cryer, Richards was “way more practical than him.” Cryer recalled an incident where Richards surprised Sheen on set, who then ran into his costar’s trailer to hide a Barely Legal porn magazine.

Richards blamed Two and a Half Men for things going south for her and Sheen, adding, “As soon as the show started getting very successful, I think the pressure of that changed him. It was almost like he was sabotaging the success and sabotaging our family. When things were going good, I felt like things were getting sabotaged.”

Sheen admitted he started abusing pills and that led to “irrational anger.” Richards tried to get him help but claimed Sheen was surrounded by people who enabled him.

“That is when I started to see that people in his life were trying to pit us against each other. That was very difficult for me,” she explained. “He got very aggressive. What I went through and what he put me through, I don’t know how I am here. The only way through tragedy — which is what I was going through — was having a f***ing sense of humor about it because it was so bad.”

Sheen acknowledged that his behavior hurt Richards in the past. They are now on good terms and Richards later shared that she was the one who advised Sheen to get tested for HIV before his diagnosis. Richards, who is currently going through a messy split from ex Aaron Phypers, admitted she “still loves” Sheen before getting emotional on screen.

From Lola’s Perspective

In her own confessional, Lola recalled being estranged from Sheen when she was a child.

“I always wanted him to be sober growing up just because you can’t have a real relationship with someone who is going through addiction,” she said. “They are not in the right frame of mind. I was never really close with my dad.”

Sheen’s sobriety has allowed him to have a better relationship with Lola. (He is currently not on speaking terms with his and Richards’ eldest daughter, Sami.)

“I always call him when I need something,” Lola added about her standing appointment with Sheen for smoothies and pedicures. “I always feel like he’s the first person who will answer the phone immediately. He will drop everything for me.”

Charlie’s History With Brooke

After Sheen’s whirlwind romance with Mueller, Cryer recalled his wife, Lisa Joyner, attending their wedding and telling him she had “concerns” about the relationship lasting. Joyner told Cryer that Charlie’s father, Martin Sheen, gave a toast where he said, ‘I hope you two know what you are doing.'”

Their Individual Relapses

Charlie recalled being nine years sober when he heard Brooke in the bathroom with a girl getting high, which triggered him to get back into crack again. He opted out of discussing the subsequent arrest in 2009 when he was charged on suspicion of domestic abuse after Mueller claimed that he threatened her with a knife during a fight.

Charlie was booked on two felonies, including second-degree assault and menacing and a misdemeanor of criminal mischief. He was later sentenced to 30 days in a drug rehab center, 30 days of probation and 36 hours of anger management.

In the doc, Charlie said he wanted to offer Mueller a chance to tell her side of the story. Mueller, meanwhile, admitted she “quickly recanted” her story because she didn’t want Charlie to go to prison.

“I had to recant my story,” she said. “If I didn’t, he could have gotten into a lot of trouble. Not only is he my husband but I was so incredibly screwed up on serious drugs for a very long time. Once I sobered up … I can’t even recall. I saw myself as psychotic.”

Charlie noted that he has “made amends over and over” to Mueller. She added, “I don’t think it is fair to pick the moments when Charlie was at his lowest and define him as a human being based on those moments. Especially with a history of substance abuse.”

Their Lives Now

At the end of the doc, Mueller and Charlie’s son Bob was briefly interviewed about how he “recently started living” with his dad. Bob poked fun at how different he and his dad were because of how messy he can be — which has led to some passive aggressive notes from Charlie.

The notes were shown on screen, which read, “Wipe your hands or don’t use this” and “Satan is warning you Bob!” There was a third not next to an empty food box in the fridge where Charlie wrote, “Whoever did this is a lazy c***.”

“Even though a lot of our personalities are really different, we fix each other’s mistakes. When [my mom is] sober, she’s great. As long as she’s sober, I am happy,” Bob said. “I feel like [my bond with my dad] it’s a deeper connection than most kids have with their parents.”

Mueller also thanked Charlie for helping her.

“Charlie really stepped up when my stuff was going dark. It was really dark. He had all the reason not to be there for me. Now he’s taken the role of the responsible protector especially with the boys,” she told the cameras as there was footage of them hugging in present time.

Charlie was asked about Mueller’s ongoing journey to stay sober, to which he added in support, “Her timeline for recovery is just different from mine.”
