Donald Trump Diagnosed With 'Common' Vein Condition After Leg Swelling

President Donald Trump has been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency after experiencing leg swelling over the past few weeks.

The White House announced on Thursday, July 17, that the president, 79, recently underwent a “comprehensive examination” conducted by his physician Sean Barbabella out of an “abundance of caution.”

The examination included “diagnostic vascular studies” and ultrasounds on Trump’s bilateral lower extremity provided by the White House Medical Unit, according to the physician’s note to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. (The report was later shared in a press release.)

The doctor determined that Trump has chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), which is a “form of venous disease that occurs when veins in your legs are damaged,” according to the Cleveland Clinic. CVI causes blood to “pool” in leg veins, which the clinic says can lead to “high pressure” in the veins.

According to the physician, the condition is “benign and common,” especially in patients over the age of 70. He noted, “There was no evidence of deep vein thrombosis or arterial disease.”

“It’s basically not alarming information, and it’s not surprising,” Dr. Jeremy Faust, an assistant professor of emergency medicine at Harvard Medical School, told CNN.

Faust explained, “This is a pretty normal part of aging, and especially for someone in the overweight to obese category, which is where the president has always been. But the bigger concern … is that symptoms like this do need to be evaluated for more serious conditions, and that is what happened.”

Leavitt, meanwhile, said that Trump was experiencing “no discomfort” and would defer to Barbabella for treatment for the condition. Common treatments include compression therapy, leg elevation, exercise and other lifestyle changes. Medications and surgical treatments may be necessary later on.

After running a blood count test and “comprehensive metabolic panel,” Trump’s doctor Barbabella said the president’s results were “within normal limits.”

The doctor also reported that following Trump’s echocardiogram there were “no signs of heart failure, renal impairment or systemic illness.”

The physician also addressed the “minor bruising” that has been spotted on the back of Trump’s hand in recent photos. The doctor said the bruising is “consistent with minor soft tissue irritation” due to “frequent handshaking” and the use of aspirin, which Trump takes as part of his “cardiovascular prevention regimen.”

The doctor concluded, “President Trump remains in excellent health.”
