Dancing With the Stars pro Alan Bersten is grateful to be continuing on in the competition after partner Elaine Hendrix’s hospitalization.
“You guys voted, we are going to be safe. We got another dance to [perform],” Bersten, 31, said during a TikTok Live with girlfriend Emma Slater after the Tuesday, October 28, Halloween Night episode.
He continued, “We’re going to take it easy but we will be back for the show. We will take this week easy.”
Minutes into the live show on Tuesday, news broke that Hendrix, 54, was in the hospital after suffering an injury during dress rehearsal. While in the hospital, Hendrix addressed her absence in a social media video.
“Halloween is my favorite, and I’m devastated,” she captioned the clip. “I was beyond excited to share what we had worked so hard on, although you’ll see a version of it. With your support, I’ll be back in the ballroom next week. I want nothing more.”
Bersten and Hendrix were subsequently scored by judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Derek Hough, Bruno Tonioli and guest judge Cheryl Burke based on footage from their rehearsal — and earned 32 points out of 40 for their Argentine tango. The pair received no bonus points during the episode’s Monster Night Monster-thon dance relay.
Fans, however, rallied around the pro dancer and the Parent Trap star. The duo were ultimately safe from elimination and will compete in next week’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Night. (The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives’ Jen Affleck and pro Jan Ravnik were sent packing on Tuesday.)
The contestants, meanwhile, praised Hendrix for her commitment. Pro Mark Ballas exclusively shared with Us Weekly that it’s “a huge relief” Hendrix and Bersten are still able to lace up their dancing shoes for another week.
“I really believe Elaine is having such a magical moment on this show,” Ballas, 39, told Us. “I love watching her dance, and she’s a great human being. I just adore her. So, hearing that she’s able to continue is a huge relief. I’m just glad it wasn’t a fracture or break.”
In Ballas’ perspective, injuries are not uncommon for DWTS. “Look, this is hard. It’s physical. … I’ve been on the end of her injury. Many of our pros have, celebs have. I’m just so relieved for her that she’s able to continue, that she was voted for so she could carry on and that it’s not crazy serious,” he continued.
Hendrix, for her part, has been open about her health on the show — including facing an injury after being in a car accident more than 30 years ago.
“I have a titanium joint in my right foot, so that renders half my foot unusable,” she said during her intro package on Wicked Night earlier this month. “Every week, my body shifts into a new pain spot, but I just don’t want to let it stop me. … I know my determination is going to win it, just getting there is quite a journey.”
Dancing With the Stars airs on ABC and Disney+ Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET.
