George and Amal Clooney Hold Hands in Venice Ahead of Film Festival

Longtime bachelor George Clooney finally met his match in the stunning, accomplished human rights lawyer Amal Clooney. Still, it took Amal a little bit to accept that their romance was the real deal. “We never talked about marriage when we were dating, and I asked her out of the blue,” George told CBS in November 2020. “[It] took her a long time to say yes. I was on my knee for, like, 20 minutes. I finally said, ‘Look, I’m gonna throw my hip out.’ We told that story to her parents, and they’re like, ‘There’s something wrong with his hip?'” The pair first met while in Lake Como, Italy, in 2013. Later that year, they had their first date in London. The two got married in a fantasy wedding at the Aman Canal Grande Hotel in Venice, Italy, in September 2014. While the couple didn’t initially plan to start a family, Us Weekly confirmed in February 2017 that they were expecting. The pair welcomed their twins, Alexander and Ella, in June 2017. George and Amal were first spotted together in London. Later, the actor confirmed that the sighting had been their first date.

Us confirmed that the pair were engaged after they were spotted dining together at Craig's restaurant in West Hollywood and “toasting their engagement.”

Amal made one of her first official appearances with love George at the Celebrity Fight Night Gala in Florence, Italy. The two got engaged a few months prior, shocking fans of the famed bachelor. 

George and Amal exchanged vows in a swanky ceremony at Aman Canal Grande. She wore a dream gown by Oscar de la Renta, while he sported a tux by Armani. 

The excitement continued when the twosome stepped out together in Venice, Italy, boarding a boat one day after they tied the knot. Standing in the sunshine, they waved to fans and revelers as Mr. and Mrs. Clooney. 

The newlyweds wrapped their whirlwind trip as a stunning married couple. They looked classically beautiful in their late summer duds, grinning after their big celebration.

The Clooneys snuck in a smooch in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico after celebrating New Year's Eve in the vacation destination. They rung in 2015 alongside good pals Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber.

Amal made her awards show debut at the 72nd Annual Golden Globe Awards in Beverly Hills, Calif. She attended the celebratory affair at The Beverly Hilton Hotel on George's arm.

Mr. and Mrs. Clooney were the picture-perfect pair at the 100 LIVES initiative's event to launch the Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity in New York City, showing their charitable sides. 

The barrister paid a visit to her actor husband on the New York City set of his movie Money Monster, giving the star a quick hello as he worked.

Amal walked the red carpet in a stunning gown outside of New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art. She attended the Costume Institute Gala Benefit on the arm of George, who turned heads in a well-cut tuxedo. 

The couple stopped by George's annual family reunion in Augusta, Kentucky, where they even made a trip to the actor's beloved local bakery, Magee's, for some sweets. “They were fun as a couple!” co-owner Russell Dickson told Us at the time.

The human rights lawyer giggled adorably and showed off her enviable gams in a blue floral-printed frock during a brief summer getaway in Lake Como, Italy. George matched Amal in a pale blue suit and white button-down shirt.

George and his wife attended a Casamigos Tequila bash at the Ushuaia Beach Hotel in Ibiza, Spain, where they snuggled adorably. "George and Amal were very affectionate throughout the trip," an observer told Us at the time. "They were dancing and mingling with friends, but they managed to never stray too far from one another. They were always holding hands."

The happy couple attended the premiere of Our Brand Is Crisis at the Chinese Theatre on in Hollywood.

George shared the secret to his marriage with Extra. “FaceTime, we’ll do that. Mostly it’s just try not to go very long. … We spend an awful lot of time together,” he explained. “We try not to have these huge gaps.”

George gave his wife a kiss on the cheek at the Money Monster premiere during the 69th annual Cannes Film Festival in France. After celebrating their two-year wedding anniversary in September 2016, he quipped to Entertainment Tonight: “And they said it wouldn’t last. Ah, we proved them wrong!” and revealing that to celebrate “I [made] dinner and we had a very nice, a very romantic second anniversary.”

Amal looked stunning at a screening of The White Helmets hosted by the Clooney Foundation For Justice in London, England. The event marked one of the first events where the pregnant lawyer showed off a hint of a bump.

The pair welcomed a baby boy and a baby girl in June 2017. “This morning Amal and George welcomed Ella and Alexander Clooney into their lives. Ella, Alexander and Amal are all healthy, happy and doing fine,” his rep told Us in a statement. “George is sedated and should recover in a few days.”

George and Amal held hands after playing tennis together in Laglio, Italy. The couple looked sporty for the match, with the Oscar winner wearing a polo shirt and gym shorts, and the human rights attorney rocking a tank top and a matching skirt.

The proud parents returned to the red carpet for the first time since their twins’ births to attend the Venice Film Festival. Amal stunned in a lilac gown, while George wore a classic black tux.

The Oscar winner raved about his wife during an appearance on My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman. “I have to say, before I had the twins, I felt that about her. I felt that I had met someone who I would absolutely, you know, trade my life for,” he gushed. “I met someone who her life meant more to me than my life. And I’d never had that experience before.”

The duo were just two of the famous faces in attendance at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding at Windsor Castle. Amal dressed in a bright yellow sheath and matching fascinator. George, for his part, looked dapper in a gray suit.

The twosome were spotted enjoying a double date with Barack and Michelle Obama in Italy. The couples took a boat ride on Lake Como as they were rumored to be en route to a charity dinner for The Clooney Foundation for Justice.

George and Amal celebrated their 5th wedding anniversary with close pals Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber. The group of four grabbed dinner at 4 Charles Prime Rib in NYC.

The Suburbicon director supported Amal at the American Society of International Law’s gala in NYC, where she was honored for work as a human rights advocate.

In his GQ Icon of the Year profile, George credited his wife with changing his views about settling down. “I was like, ‘I’m never getting married. I’m not gonna have kids.’ … And then everything changed,” he recalled. “I’d never been in the position where someone else’s life was infinitely more important to me than my own. You know? And then tack on two more individuals, who are small and have to be fed.”

The actor turned 60 on May 6, 2021. One week before his birthday, a source told Us that the couple’s marriage was “very solid,” noting that George feels “happy and blessed” with his wife.

“He doubted for so long that he’d get to meet that soulmate he always dreamed of … but when Amal came along, everything changed,” the insider added. “It’s no exaggeration to say she swept him off his feet.”

The pair were glowing at the Los Angeles premiere of Amazon's upcoming drama The Tender Bar.

The director saved his wife from a wardrobe malfunction at the premiere of his film Tender Bar. When Amal nearly tripped over her custom 16Arlington sequin dress, George jumped into action to help steady her. The pair then continued their walk down the red carpet as if nothing had happened.

“Marriage has been wonderful. I have in my husband a partner who is incredibly inspirational and supportive, and we have a home filled with love and laughter,” Amal gushed via her Time magazine’s “Women of the Year” profile in March 2022. “It is a joy beyond anything I could ever have imagined. I feel so lucky to have found a great love in my life, and to be a mother — this is how I get my balance.”

The lovebirds emulated Old Hollywood glamour at the London premiere of Ticket to Paradise, George's romantic comedy with longtime friend and Oceans franchise costar Julia Roberts.

The Tender Bar director donned a midnight blue suit with a casual white button down while Amal rocked a light blue beaded sheath with thin straps and art deco-style patterning. The human rights lawyer paired the simple yet stunning look with red lipstick and minimal jewelry.

George wore a standard black suit while Amal wore an eye-catching green gown at the second annual Academy Museum Gala in Los Angeles.

“It was a disaster, I planned it out, I planned the whole thing out,” the Ticket to Paradise star recalled during an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show. “I’ve got the ring in a little drawer behind her, I’ve made dinner and we had only been dating for about six months.”

George had planned to present Amal with her engagement ring as the song “Why Shouldn’t I,” by his late aunt Rosemary Clooney played in the background. “I got the ring in the drawer and the song starts and I told her there was a lighter can you get it — we had a candle on but I blew it out so she could get the lighter,” he said. “She sees the ring in the drawer and pulls it out. She says, ‘There's a ring there,’ like somebody left a ring there years earlier.”

While Amal was puzzled over the diamond, George was waiting on his knee as Rosemary’s song had concluded. “I literally said, 'Listen, I really would like to marry you but I also am not young, and I've been on my knee now and I could like lose a hip,’” he quipped.

The couple walked the red carpet at the Kennedy Center Honors Formal Artist's Dinner in Washington, D.C. In one sweet moment, George fixed Amal’s red Valentino gown train as they posed for photos. The actor was honored at the ceremony for his lifetime achievements the following day. 

George and Amal were dressed to the nines for the 2023 Albie Awards, a gala thrown by the duo’s non-profit organization. 

The couple looked fabulous in dark ensembles at the Boys In the Boat premiere in London. Amal showed off her figure in a flowy crop top and fitted skirt while George rocked a classy suit. 

George couldn’t keep his eyes off his wife as they walked the red carpet at their foundation’s third annual Albie Awards. The evening also marked their 10-year anniversary (at midnight). “I have some presents ready to be unveiled at midnight,” Amal told Entertainment Tonight of her husband’s romantic gestures.

“I have a surprise. She doesn’t know what it’s going to be yet,” George teased. “We’re going somewhere.”

George and Amal were spotted arriving in Venice on August 26 ahead of the premiere of George’s film Jay Kelly at the Venice Film Festival. After exiting a boat, the couple held hands as they walked through the streets of the city. Amal sported a butter yellow jumpsuit, while George wore a black short-sleeved polo and beige pants.
