The pair first sparked dating rumors when the couple showed some PDA outside Juice Crafters in L.A. “Kate grabbed him and wrapped her arms around him,” an eyewitness told Us at the time. “They were kissing and not shy about it at all. She was really flirty.”
Hudson and the musician made their red carpet debut as a couple at the L.A. premiere of Snatched, starring Hudson’s mom Goldie Hawn. The couple posed for photos together and kissed while walking down the red carpet. Hawn and the How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days actress' stepfather, Kurt Russell, told Entertainment Tonight that they'd given Fujikawa their seal of approval. “He’s a great guy. Yeah, he’s very special actually,” she said. Russell added: “I always approve. Kate brings good guys.”
The pair traveled to Cambodia together two months after their first sighting as a couple. The actress shared photos from the trip on Instagram, including a selfie with her beau and a local. She captioned it: "Taking rest from the rain in the jungle with @swimswammyslippyslappy and Vy! ❤️🇰🇭❤️.”
Hudson gushed about her man and their relationship during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, saying that the musician loved her buzzed haircut for her role in the movie Sister. “I hope our relationship can transcend hair,” the Golden Globe winner joked at the time. Prior to this relationship, the Marshall star was linked to Nick Jonas and Diplo. Hudson shares Ryder with ex-husband Chris Robinson, whom she was married to from 2000 to 2007. She and ex-fiancé Matthew Bellamy are parents of son Bingham, whom they welcomed in July 2011.
The couple celebrated their first date anniversary on December 3, 2017, and the actress took to Instagram with a loving note about their relationship milestone. In the caption of a photo of them kissing, Hudson revealed that they had met 15 years prior to them dating. “The first time I met Danny I was 23 and enormously pregnant with Ryder. His step sisters are my best friends @sarafoster @erinfoster and so it goes we have been in the same circle for over a decade!” she wrote. “A year ago today Danny took me on a hike and what I thought was just a hike with a family friend turned very quickly into an unexpected first date. No moves were made on this first date. In fact, it took months for him to make a first move! And as a kiss on this bridge would have been nice, the kiss a year later was so much sweeter.”
She added: “So on our 15th year of knowing each other we were able to open our hearts to each other to feel so much pure love and it’s been truly incredible. Happy first date anniversary baby. #LoveThisMan #WhatAYear.”
The actress shared a video of her gender reveal party to announce that the pair had a baby on the way. “SURPRISE!!! 🤱 If you’ve wondered why I’ve been so absent on my social channels it’s because I have never been more sick! It’s was the most sick first trimester of all my children,” the Almost Famous star captioned the clip. “Boomerangs have made me nauseous, Superzoom is an easy way to have my head in the toilet, food instagrams make me queezy and thinking too much about insta stories made me even more exhausted than I already had been. If you’ve seen me out and about smiling and pretending like everything is amazing…I was lying! BUT! I have broken through on the other end of that and rediscovering the joys of insta/snap. We have been trying to keep this pregnancy under the radar for as long as possible but I’m a poppin now!” she continued. “And it’s too darn challenging to hide, and frankly hiding is more exhausting then just coming out with it! My kids, Danny, myself and the entire family are crazy excited! A little girl on the way 💕.”
As the pair quarantined at home together amid the coronavirus pandemic, they learned to spice up their love life. "There's nobody else I'd want to be quarantined with right now. He's just the best," Hudson said on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen.
She has a type! Hudson opened up about why she's so drawn to musicians, telling InStyle that her attraction goes beyond the surface. "The reason I connect so deeply with musicians ... is because we all connect to music in a way that you don't have to explain. You just feel it, and it's something you love," she said.
"You know what I’m doing? I’m pre-planning the planning. Just kind of thinking of what we want to do and then I'm going back and forth between like, ‘What is this really going to look like?’” Hudson told Entertainment Tonight, comparing the task to her rom-com Bride Wars. "Obviously, we’re so excited. But the idea of planning a wedding is, like, a lot. It's a lot. I made a whole movie about it."
The Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery actress told Entertainment Tonight at the sequel's premiere that she and her fiancé are "absolutely not" rushing wedding planning. "I mean, I love that man. He's right over there, hiding," she teased on the red carpet. "But the last thing we're doing right now during the holidays is planning anything but the holidays. ... We're in no hurry."
"Right now, planning a wedding feels insane, but I’m excited to plan a wedding, and I go back and forth between a small wedding and a large wedding," Hudson said on the "Table for Two" podcast.
She recalled her 2000 wedding to Robinson being "so small," which factored into her vision for her and Fujikawa's vows. "There's a part of me that wants the big bash, you know?" she explained. "There's, like, two sides to me: the big bash or the small, intimate [wedding]. I think somewhere in there I'm going to come up with both."
The couple are also considering adhering to Japanese tradition to "honor" the groom's heritage. "We do sometimes go back and forth with the traditional Japanese wedding ceremony, which would be really beautiful and quite emotional for Danny, seeing as his dad is gone," she said. "It'll totally be a destination wedding. It'll be such an adventure that people will really want to have to come to show up. To me, those are always the most fun weddings. Like, if you really want to be there, you'll be there. ... If someone's like, 'I can't really be there,' then I don't want you there. That's all I got right now. That's all I got for the wedding."
Hudson penned a sweet tribute to Fujikawa on his 37th birthday, calling him “the most loving, pure, honest, sensitive, brilliant, caring man.”
“Happiest Birthday to my love, my partner, my man! I’m so grateful we shacked up together, had a baby and decided to be married … when we have time to plan it 😳🥰,” she wrote via Instagram. “People wonder what makes love last…I wonder too! I think there’s a lot of factors but this last slide has to definitely be one. Find someone to get weird with and no, this will not be the direction of my album, this is just what happens in our house when there’s day drinking involved….😆 I love you madly @fujikawadanny HAPPY BIRTHDAY 🎉.”
