With just days to go before the Miss World 2025 finale in Hyderabad, Miss World Organisation CEO Julia Morley is calm but alert. The pageant has come under an unsavoury spotlight following a controversy involving Miss England Milla Magee, who quit the event. While she cited personal reasons initially, she spoke to a UK tabloid and turned it into concerns about safety in India.
In an exclusive conversation with The Hindu, Ms. Morley dismisses these claims as hurtful and unsubstantiated, while reaffirming her confidence in the people and hospitality of Telangana.
When did you first come to know about the controversy involving Miss England?
I was as baffled as anyone. The young woman said she had to leave because her mother was unwell. As a parent myself, I understand that and of course helped her get back home. She left with our full support. Then, suddenly, we see articles and videos implying something very different. I still don’t quite understand what happened. But I do know this, when you host a major international event like this, sometimes people try to steal attention for the wrong reasons.
Are you suggesting this was deliberate?
Sadly, I think she believed she didn’t stand a chance in the competition and decided to leave a mark anyway. But this is not how you do it, not by insulting a country that has welcomed us with such open arms. Truth and unity are our strength and we do not want to react in haste. We will respond through the proper legal channels after we are done with Miss World 2025.
How have the other contestants reacted?
They have been very understanding. Everyone knew she was leaving and why. There was no drama at that time. They were told her mother was unwell, and everyone sympathised. But now, seeing what has come out, I think they see it for what it is, a desperate attempt to gain attention. We do not want to give it more airtime. We are here to celebrate something beautiful, and we will not let one person cast a shadow over that.
Coming to the big picture, how has the month-long experience in Telangana been for the Miss World team?
Absolutely wonderful. Telangana has been sensational, the style, the kindness, the coordination it has all been remarkable. It is the first time the pageant has been hosted here, and I do hope it will not be the last. I really hope they invite us back. We have loved every moment.
What can audiences expect from the grand finale on May 31?
They can expect 108 excited, intelligent, and beautifully dressed young women ready to share their stories with the world. They have made lifelong friends here. Many of their families are flying in, and that makes it even more special, it becomes a global family gathering. It is not just a show, it will be a celebration of unity and growth.
