Mumbai, Thane waterlogged after heavy rains; IMD issues flash flood warning

Many parts of Mumbai and Thane districts of Maharashtra were waterlogged due to heavy rains on Sunday morning. Parts of Mahim in Mumbai were affected by waterlogging. The water level of Mithi River in Mumbai has increased after continuous rains. Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a flash flood warning for Sunday in Konkan in Maharashtra, including Mumbai.

Due to heavy rains, flash floods are likely in Konkan and Goa including Mumbai city, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg and suburban Mumbai districts.

According to a press release, 24 hour Outlook for Flash Flood Risk (FFR) up to 11:30 IST of 17-08-2025: Moderate to high flash flood risk is likely over some catchment areas and neighbourhoods of the following meteorological sub-divisions during the next 24 hours. Konkan and Goa - North Goa, South Goa, Mumbai City, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg and Suburban Mumbai districts.

The release said that due to the expected rainfall over the next 24 hours, some completely saturated soils and surface runoff/inundation in low lying areas may occur in the Area of Concern (AOC) as shown in the map.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in Mumbai city and suburbs, and strong winds ranging from 40-50 kmph to 60 kmph are likely on Sunday morning.

According to the weather department, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over Goa, Maharashtra and Gujarat during the next seven days, while extremely heavy rainfall is likely over the Ghat region of Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra, including Mumbai and Goa, from August 16 to 19.

Mumbai received heavy rains, with the city receiving 92.81 mm of rain from 8 am on August 16 to 8 am on August 17. The eastern suburbs received 78.15 mm and the western suburbs received 103.98 mm.

On Saturday, Mumbai's Santacruz received 24 cm of rain and Colaba received 8 cm of rain.
