Nina Dobrev’s Dating History Includes a Former Costar and Olympian

Nina Dobrev has been a part of power couples both on and off screen. During the actress’ Vampire Diaries days, she started dating costar Ian Somerhalder — and yes, this was before their respective characters, Elena and Damon, got together on the show. Dobrev and Somerhalder kicked off their relationship in 2010 and went public with their romance one year later. She told Seventeen in 2012 that dating someone on the show was an unexpected twist. "I didn't want to be dating one of my costars — my goal on the show was to be professional," Dobrev said at the time. "But sometimes you can't help who you have a connection with, and you can only fight it for so long — which I did for a really, really long time." Us Weekly broke the news in May 2013 that Dobrev and Somerhalder had called it quits on their relationship after three years. She later sparked dating rumors with Shaun White in February 2020. The duo were spotted getting cozy on multiple occasions before Us confirmed in April 2020 that they were dating. The Vampire Diaries costars began dating in 2010 after meeting on the set of the CW show. Us exclusively confirmed their split in May 2013.

Us broke the news in September 2013 that Dobrev was dating the Dancing With the Stars pro, who is her friend Julianne Hough's brother. The duo called it quits after just six weeks of dating.

Dobrev was spotted getting cozy with The Hunger Games star in February 2014 while they were both in Atlanta filming The Vampire Diaries and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, respectively.

Dobrev and the Scream Queens alum were first linked in January 2017, but their romance cooled off in November of that year.

The Let It Burn star was first spotted with Dobrev in December 2018 while they were on vacation in Indonesia. Two months later, Us exclusively confirmed that the pair were an item. Dobrev and Grant ended their relationship in October 2019 after nearly one year of dating.

Dobrev was first linked to the professional snowboarder in February 2020, when fans realized they had posted similar photos via social media from a trip to South Africa. Weeks later, they were photographed while going for a bike ride together in Malibu.

Us confirmed in April 2020 that they were dating. One month later, a source told Us that the twosome have been "living together" amid the coronavirus pandemic. White proposed to Dobrev in October 2024, but the two had split after five years in September 2025.
