Briana DeJesus is confident in her choice to get her eldest daughter, Nova, a nose piercing for her 14th birthday — even if the haters don’t approve.
“My girl is such a good girl and she’s nothing like me or like any of these teens that I hear about,” DeJesus, 31, wrote via Snapchat on Thursday, September 4, in response to backlash over a recent mother-daughter outing where the pair got matching piercings. “I want her to be able to express herself and feel confident!”
The Teen Mom: The Next Chapter star explained that Nova is a “straight A student taking high school courses and she’s such [a] sweet baby!”
DeJesus pointed out, “It’s just a piercing and it’s not permanent,” adding that Nova had been “wanting this for a long time.”
While the reality star admitted she was “hesitant at first” to allow her teenage daughter to get a piercing, DeJesus “thought about it and felt like I wasn’t really hearing her and decided it would be OK!”
DeJesus clapped back at naysayers, adding that Nova is “such a blessing and she deserves whatever she wants as long as she keeps up her grades and stays out of trouble.”
She concluded, “A piercing isn’t going to change her.”
DeJesus shut down additional critics of her parenting choice via a video shared via TikTok on Wednesday, September 3.
“A lot of you guys are saying that Nova’s too young to get, like, a nose piercing, but it’s, like, it’s literally just a piercing, you know, it’s not like it’s a tattoo,” she said. “It’s not like she’s changing something on her body. She literally just — is just getting a piercing. It’s really not that big of a deal, guys.”
DeJesus shares Nova with ex-boyfriend Devoin Austin III. The pair welcomed Nova in September 2011, and their journey was documented on 16 & Pregnant in 2012.
The MTV personality welcomed her second daughter, Stella, with ex Luis Hernandez in July 2017.
As her girls have started to grow up — especially Nova — DeJesus has been honest about the emotional toll it’s taken on her and how eye-opening it’s been.
“When I look at my Nova, who is now 13, I see myself. I’m like, ‘Why was I doing all of these grown-up activities at such a young age?’” DeJesus said during an April appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show. “I see Nova as a baby. I was a baby. Why was I having sex at 13 years old? Where were my parents to guide me in the right direction?”
The Teen Mom star started to tear up before getting a hug from host Drew Barrymore.
“I’m proud of who I am today, but it was hard. It was hard. I’m no longer in that survival mode,” DeJesus shared. “I’m more relaxed now. I’m more confident.”
She added, “I want my kids to be kids and to be selfish and live a kid life. There’s no reason why my 13-year-old should be out doing things that she shouldn’t be doing. Plain and simple.”
