Who Are Chloe Malle's Parents? Meet Candice Bergen and Louis Malle

12 hours ago 1

Chloe Malle secured the prestigious title as American Vogue’s new head of editorial content, carving out her own path much like her mother, Candice Bergen, and late father, Louis Malle.

Now that she is waltzing into her own role in a major way after fashion and publishing icon Anna Wintour stepped down from her position as editor in chief earlier this year, it may come as no surprise that Malle’s parents are recognized as influential Hollywood figures in their own right.

But don’t get it twisted — she highlighted that being called a “nepo baby” by critics made her “work much harder” in an interview with The New York Times following the promotion announcement on September 2, 2025.

“Fashion and media are both evolving at breakneck speed, and I am so thrilled — and awed — to be part of that,” she told the outlet at the time, adding that she’s ready to take the helm. “I also feel incredibly fortunate to still have Anna just down the hall as my mentor.”

Candice Bergen Is an Emmy-Winning Actress

Bergen’s name may sound familiar, as she’s widely known for her role on the hit show Murphy Brown, for which she won five Emmys and two Golden Globes. She also made waves when she played Shirley Schmidt on Boston Legal.

Ironically, the actress also played a memorable character on Sex and the City named Enid Frick, the fictional Vogue editor-in-chief. She appeared in three episodes spanning throughout seasons 4, 5 and 6, as well as in the first 2008 movie.

Fans were also excited to see Enid making her return during the second season of And Just Like That.

While making a name for herself in Tinseltown, Bergen also received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role in 1979’s Starting Over.

Louis Malle Was an Accomplished French Director

Louis was no flash in the pan either, earning three Oscar nominations: best writing for 1973’s Murmur of the Heart, best director for Atlantic City in 1982 and best writing for Au Revoir les Enfants in 1988.

When Chloe was only 10 years old, sadly, Louis died of complications from lymphoma.

“Chloe really established a relationship with her father, which she hadn’t had before because of the separations that we just couldn’t avoid,” Bergen told NPR in 2015, referencing their homes in Los Angeles and France. “She knew that what she should do is take care of her father.”

“She did it on her own. She did it beautifully and brilliantly and she did it with courage and with humor,” the actress gushed.

Candice Bergen Hoped Chloe Would Be Born One Day After Louis Malle’s Birthday

The star said Chloe’s original due date was in late October, just like her father, who was born on October 30, 1932. She revealed the day came and went in an excerpt from her 2016 memoir, A Fine Romance, published on CBS News.

“Whoever was in there, she was hyperactive, that much was sure. [Chloe] somersaulted and flipped around. Then she landed wrong. Her feet were tangled in the umbilical cord and she was upside down and feet first. There was a high risk of her cutting off the supply of oxygen and nutrients. A risk of brain damage,” Bergen shared. “That was the beginning of the real bonding.”

“Until that point, I’d kept a bit of distance, thinking of the baby as a kind of invader in my comfortable routines. I’d dragged my feet about preparing her room,” she continued. “No longer. It was ready, wallpapered in tiny pink rosebuds.”

Chloe arrived on November 8, 1985 and was born in New York City.
