Ty Burrell is at peace with his decision to leave Los Angeles behind.
“It’s just been spectacular,” the Modern Family star, 57, told People of his new life in Salt Lake City, Utah, in an interview published on Sunday, August 3. “We moved here right after [Modern Family] ended, and I don’t have any regrets. It’s been lovely and a great place to raise the kids.”
Burrell and his wife, Holly, share two teenage daughters, Frances and Greta. While the actor admits that he is “itching” to get back in front of the cameras, he is leaning into voiceover work that allows him to spend more time at his Utah home.
“So at first, when we moved here, it almost felt like cosplay, like we were pretending to be people who were outdoorsy,” he told the publication, adding that his “parents weren’t really those kind of people” who enjoyed the outdoors.
“Now, we really truly love it,” he added of his new, post-L.A. lifestyle.
In 2020, Burrell opened up exclusively to Us Weekly about the end of Modern Family, which ran for 11 seasons on ABC before the show’s 2020 series finale.
“I knew that the last season was going to involve a lot of closure, and that particular loss was really sad, in general, because I’ve worked with Fred [Willard],” Burrell said at the time of his costar Willard’s onscreen death. “This is my second show working with Fred. So, you know, it’s kind of a professional goodbye to him. He is one of my favorite actors of all time, and I would say he’s influenced me as an actor more than anybody. Going all the way back to Spinal Tap and stuff like that. So, it was actually a pretty emotional episode.”
Burell continued of the end of the show, “It hasn’t been super melancholy. I think, maybe, because it feels right, you know? If that makes sense? I think we, especially as actors, we often don’t get to control our endings. We’re either fired or canceled.”
Burrell is just one of many Hollywood A-listers who have decided to leave the blinding lights of Los Angeles behind.
In April of this year, This Is Us star Chrissy Metz opened up about her decision to relocate from the City of Angels to Nashville, Tennessee.
“I was in L.A. for 21 years, but my family is in Florida, where I’m from, and during the pandemic, I could drive to them from here,” Metz told People at the time. “It’s just a better quality of life here. Everything is 15 minutes away, and it’s just so much less stress.”

The Vampire Diaries star Ian Somerhalder, who shares two kids with Niki Reed, also opened up about his choice to leave L.A. in the rearview.
“Walking through the farm with kids and dogs and family, every stop, you’re pulling off of trees or off of bushes, pulling up out of the ground and feeding everyone as you’re moving through the farm,” he told E! News in a 2023 interview, before admitting that living on a farm is “a lot” of work.
“It’s unbelievable when you see these amazing creature life forms and how they all live on the farm together is really special,” he added.
