Hallmark gave fans the ultimate gift announcing the third installment of the Three Wise Men franchise this month — but all good things must come to an end.
“This is a wrap-up movie,” star Andrew Walker told EntertainmentNow on Wednesday, July 16, confirming that the upcoming “Countdown to Christmas” film will be the last for the Brenner brothers, who brought laughs to viewers in 2022 when they were tasked with caring for a baby at Christmas time.
Walker, who plays Luke Brenner in the holiday films, noted that viewers will get closure with the third Three Wise Men movie, premiering later this year. (Hallmark announced the latest movie on July 12, teasing that Walker, Tyler Hynes and Paul Campbell will all be back.)
“You’re going to see a lot of people that you’ve seen in the previous movies,” Walker, 46, said, confessing, “I’d work with this group of people for the rest of my career, you know? But we can’t be selfish with what we want.”
The actor noted that finishing with a third film is “what’s best for this story in particular.” Walker admitted, “I think that sometimes if you overdo it, it loses its allure.”
With that in mind, Walker, Hynes and Campbell, who play brothers Taylor and Stephen, agreed that saying goodbye to these characters is the right call.
“We’re really happy to just get this third opportunity to do this, and to kind of, you know, tie it up with a bow and send it off and maybe create something fresh,” Walker added. “But I think three is the charm [for the Three Wise Men franchise]. We all feel very lucky.”
The Hallmark star teased that although it’ll be bittersweet to witness the curtain call for the Brenners this holiday season, fans have a lot to look forward to.
As with 2022’s Three Wise Men and a Baby and 2024’s Three Wiser Men and a Boy, Campbell, 46, and Kimberley Sustad wrote the third script. The writing team have also brought back screenwriter Russell Hainline, who assisted with the story for the sequel.
“Kimberley is all the heartfelt dialogue,” Walker shared. “And then Paul kind of colors in all the humor. And then together, they’ll tackle a lot of the bigger scenes. And then Russell is an amazing writer and just works so well with them.”
Walker has already read the script and is excited to see what fans think. “I tell you what, people are in for a treat. Yeah, it’s gonna be a fun ride,” he teased.
Walker further explained that with Miles Marthaller back as his son, Thomas, and Margaret Colin returning as the matriarch, Barbara, viewers will get the same feel-good stories they want from the Brenners. (Plus, Sustad, 38, will make another cameo, keeping with tradition of the first two films.)
“There’s a feeling of family and, you know, completeness when we’re together,” Walker said with a laugh. “It’s weird. It’s like, with us living in Vancouver right now, our extended family is Paul and Kimberley, and then when Tyler comes into town, it’s just an added bonus.”
That connection between the Hallmark stars won’t stop when the Three Wise Men franchise is over. In fact, Walker said he’s “talked” with Hynes, 39, Campbell and Sustad about collaborating again soon.
“It doesn’t mean that the three of us aren’t going to work together again,” he concluded. “There’s other stories that we can do, and there’s other stories we want to tell.”
