3 Underrated Hulu Movies to Watch This Weekend (September 5-7)

8 hours ago 1

Hulu is the destination to watch hit shows like Only Murders in the Building, but it’s also a great platform to stream movies.

There are hundreds of them, which makes choosing the right one to watch somewhat difficult.

That’s where Watch With Us comes in. We’ve selected three underrated movies for you to watch over the weekend.

Whether you choose the retro mystery See How They Run, the 2000 drama Finding Forrester or the cult classic Jennifer’s Body, you’re guaranteed to be entertained.

‘See How They Run’ (2022)

After sleazy American film director Leo Kopernick (Adrien Brody) is murdered at a London theater, there are only two people who can solve it: Inspector George Stoppard (Sam Rockwell) and his assisting officer, Constable Stalker (Saoirse Ronan). But as they interview Kopernick’s friends, enemies and everyone in between, they can’t quite figure out who did it or why. They’ll have to solve the case soon, though, as the murderer intends to strike again — and the next victim could be one of them.

See How They Run doesn’t reinvent the mystery genre — instead, it brushes off the cobwebs and spins a yarn that Agatha Christie would be proud of. This throwback suspense movie is heavy on whimsy and light on pretty much everything else. But with a cast of talented British thespians like Harris Dickinson, Ruth Wilson and David Oyelowo, See How They Run accomplishes its mission of being an entertainingly old-fashioned crime story with a light comedic touch.

‘Finding Forrester’ (2000)

Bronx teenager Jamal Wallace (Rob Brown) is a gifted student who doesn’t want anyone to know he’s smart. When he meets a reclusive neighbor, William Forrester (Sean Connery), he realizes he needs some guidance on how to become a better writer. Forrester is the right man for the job, having authored a bestselling novel before disappearing from the public eye for years. Through their unlikely relationship, Jamal and William bring out the best in each other, but will their bond be broken by their different worlds?

Finding Forrester is a shamelessly manipulative drama that works due to its confident direction and talented cast. Director Gus Van Sant largely avoids the cliches of a story involving a wise, older white man teaching a young Black kid how to become a better man. In his film debut, Brown exudes confidence and charisma, which makes you wonder why he wasn’t a bigger star. As Forrester, Connery is still Connery, but he’s different enough to make you believe he’s an ornery writer with a heart of gold.

‘Jennifer’s Body’ (2009)

Everyone wants to be Jennifer Check (Megan Fox) — she’s beautiful, popular and all the boys like her at high school. But her best friend Needy (Amanda Seyfried) senses something is wrong with Jennifer ever since she went out on a date with local indie band Low Shoulder. It turns out Needy is right — Jennifer has been possessed by a demon and is feeding off all the horny guys who want to have sex with her. Needy must now do the unthinkable and kill the only person whom she ever really cared for before Jennifer kills her.

A flop when it was first released, Jennifer’s Body has since become a cult classic — and for good reason. It successfully blends horror, comedy and sharp social commentary into one entertaining package that doesn’t waste a moment of its 102-minute runtime. As Jennifer, Fox has her best role ever — and turns in a performance that lampoons and weaponizes her sex symbol image. Jennifer’s Body is a smart horror movie that doesn’t sacrifice any of its thrills to deliver a potent message that is unapologetically feminist and fun to watch.

Jennifer’s Body is streaming on Hulu.
