Boston Blue's Danny 'Quickly' Develops 'Phenomenal Partnership' After Baez

Blue Bloods viewers are going to be in for a surprise when they see Danny’s new “phenomenal” partnership on Boston Blue following his time with Baez.

Donnie Wahlberg teased Danny’s new partner Lena (Sonequa Martin-Green), telling TV Insider on Thursday, September 11, “[Their connection] starts with an investigation that Lena’s working on, and Danny is allowed to help her due to the circumstance.”

After seeing by chance in Boston, Danny and Lena become a team.

“It’s a phenomenal partnership, partially because they are both detectives from police families and it develops pretty quickly,” he added. “They have this common thread where they can actually help each other and give each other perspective.”

Wahlberg, 56, also teased how he adjusted from playing Danny in Blue Bloods to developing him further in a spinoff, saying, “When the opportunity came to expand the universe, though I felt the weight of expectations, I couldn’t say no to carrying on that legacy.”

Most of Us met Danny on Blue Bloods, which ran from 2010 to 2024. When the audience last saw Danny, he was taking some much-needed advice from his grandfather Henry (Len Cariou) about his personal life — including his feelings for professional partner Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez).

“I always told you not to bring the job home,” Henry told Danny in the 2024 series finale, adding that the “problem now is you have no one not to bring it home to.” Henry told Danny to promise he’d “find that someone” after this case.

Danny was then seen asking Baez out on a date, saying, “You wanna get a pizza?”

Boston Blue, which premieres October 17, now follows Danny as he is looking for a change after his son Sean — now played by Mika Amonsen — becomes a Boston PD patrolman.

“Sean committed himself to pursuing his family’s legacy but wanted to do so on his own terms, which meant joining a department outside of his hometown,” read the character description. “Danny’s decision to stay in Boston gives this father and son duo a chance to reconnect on a deeper level.”

Wahlberg recently was asked about Blue Bloods and Boston Blue crossovers, to which he told Fox News Digital in June, “The viewers are saying, ‘How do we keep going with a Blue Bloods spinoff without the whole family?’ And I share that. How do we do that, right?”

The actor went on to say that any other member of the Reagan family is just a “phone call away.”

“Now, it’s just Danny going to this new world, but I can’t say a lot about it — but I could say, if he’s a Reagan, it will never be just Danny,” he shared at the time. “There’ll always be a Reagan a phone call away.”

Wahlberg continued: “And the traditions that the Reagans have, Danny wouldn’t abandon those traditions.”

Blue Bloods is currently streaming on Paramount+. Boston Blue premieres on CBS October 17, at 10 p.m. ET.
