Taylor Swift and Karlie Kloss sparked a nearly inseparable bond back in 2012 but their friendship appeared to take a turn for the worst over time.
The BFFs quickly hit it off after Swift mentioned Kloss during her January 2012 Vogue cover story, saying, “I love Karlie Kloss. I want to bake cookies with her!” The comment caught Kloss’ eye and a famous friendship was born.
Through the years, the duo put their connection on full display, both on social media and at high-power Hollywood events. Though it seemed like nothing could ever come between the two, their friendship seemingly hit a snag several years later when eagle-eyed fans noticed that Kloss was left out of Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do” video, which featured a list of her remaining squad members.
Rumors of a falling out continued to swirl on and off — but Kloss consistently shut down speculation that she and Swift had grown apart. However, Swift hinted that things had gone south after penning a powerful essay for Elle ahead of her 30th birthday.
“Something about ‘we’re in our young twenties!’ hurls people together into groups that can feel like your chosen family. And maybe they will be for the rest of your life,” Swift wrote in March 2019. “Or maybe they’ll just be your comrades for an important phase, but not forever.”

Swift name-dropped the former Victoria's Secret model during a 2012 Vogue cover story, joking that she wanted to "bake cookies" with Kloss. The comment quickly caught Kloss' attention. "Hey @taylorswift13 love the @voguemagazine cover! Your kitchen or mine? :)," she tweeted in January 2012.
"She threw the best afterparty ever!" Kloss told Us Weekly after attending the 2014 Met Gala with the Grammy winner. "We were all playing pool in our ball gowns and just eating pizza and hanging out — just like you'd do at a teenage afterparty."
While speaking with Us exclusively, Kloss hinted that the "Lover" songstress had "no time for boys" following her split from Harry Styles. "She's true to who she is. She's such a special girl," Kloss told Us at the time. "I feel really lucky that we connected and our paths crossed. She's just a special girl."
Kloss and the "Cardigan" singer put their friendship to the test in a candid Vogue video after gracing the magazine's cover together for its March 2015 issue. In the magazine, Swift noted that people had told the two “we needed to meet” for years before becoming friends. “I remember makeup artists and hair people going, 'Doesn't she remind you of Karlie? God, she and Karlie would be best friends. They're the same,’” Swift added.
Months later, Kloss made a cameo in Swift's star-studded "Bad Blood" music video.
Swift was joined by her famous friend group onstage during the London stop of her 1989 tour in Hyde Park. Kloss stood beside model pals Martha Hunt, Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner as they sang along to "Style." Cara Delevingne and Serena Williams also posed with the group for the girl power moment.
The besties partied with choreographer Todrick Hall at Coachella Music and Arts Festival in April 2016.
"Happiest of Birthdays to my ride or die @taylorswift ❤️🎂👯❤️," Kloss wrote in honor of Swift's 27th birthday alongside an Instagram pic of the "Love Story" singer planting a kiss on her cheek. "I feel blessed to count you as my friend, sister and partner in crime. Can't wait to celebrate together very soon ❤️🍪🍾."
A source exclusively told Us that "Taylor and Karlie are still very much good friends" after Kloss' name was apparently left off of Swift's squad T-shirt in her "Look What You Made Me Do" music video. "Taylor respects Karlie so much for doing her own thing and being smart," the insider said at the time. "Taylor has so much admiration for her, especially for educating girls with coding."
"Swish, swish, bish." Eagle-eyed social media users caught Kloss seemingly throwing shade at the "Reputation" singer in a January 2018 Instagram post that referenced Katy Perry's Swift diss track. After facing backlash in the comments, Kloss tweaked her caption to: "Nothing but net 🏀❤️ Love."
Rest assured, Kaylor fans. The Project Runway host quickly dispelled speculation of tension in her friendship with Swift during a March 2018 profile in The New York Times. "Don't believe everything you read," she hinted after listing the "Willow" signer as one of her "closest friends."
"No one puts on a show like @taylorswift 🎤✨," Kloss gushed via Instagram after dropping by one of Swift's sold-out stadium shows as whispers of a feud between them continued to spread. "#ReputationTour Nashville was out of this world, I am SO proud of you 🖤."
Eight months after Jennifer Lawrence said she wanted to know "what's going on with" the BFFs, Kloss cleared the air in her "73 Questions" video for Vogue. "The world needs to know? Well, Jennifer Lawrence was interested," the Kode with Klossy founder teased in October 2018. "Jen, don't worry, Taylor and I are still really good friends."
"It's sad but sometimes when you grow, you outgrow relationships. You may leave behind friendships along the way, but you'll always keep the memories," Swift wrote in a thoughtful Elle essay titled "30 Things I Learned Before Turning 30," hinting that even the strongest bonds can be broken.
At the time, Kloss told Andy Cohen that she "loved" the Miss Americana star's honest post. "Taylor is incredible, and I feel really lucky to call her a friend, and she's one of the hardest working women," she added during an interview on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen.
Rumors of a falling out continued to swirl when Swift was noticeably absent from Kloss' second wedding celebration with husband Joshua Kushner in Wyoming, less than one year after the pair tied the knot in Australia in October 2018.
In the midst of Swift's clash with her former record label, Big Machine, and Scooter Braun, the music exec gushed over the "week of laughter" he spent with Kloss in August 2019. Two months prior, the Cats actress claimed Braun was a "manipulative bully" after she made "the excruciating choice" to leave her masters in the hands of Big Machine.
After releasing two bonus tracks for her ninth record, Evermore, Swift's fans were quick to speculate that she threw shade at Kloss between the lines. "When the words of a sister come back in whispers / That prove she was not, in fact, what she seemed / Not a twin from your dreams / She’s a crook who was caught," Swift sings in the first verse of "It's Time to Go," prompting listeners to believe she was referring to her falling out with the model.
Swift later detailed the meaning behind the song, writing in an Instagram post that it told a story "about listening to your gut when it tells you to leave. How you always know before you know, you know?"
Fans were surprised to catch Kloss at Swift’s final performance of The Eras Tour’s first U.S. leg in Los Angeles. Unlike other celebrity concert attendees, Kloss was spotted in the bleachers rather than the VIP tent.
While speaking to Yahoo Life, Kloss was asked her thoughts on Swift's The Tortured Poets Department album and she struggled to name her favorite tracks.
“I’d say the whole album [is my favorite],” she told the outlet. “I mean, her music is classic.”
After she was once again asked to name her all-time favorite song, Kloss, added, “She’s got so many hits. I definitely love 'Shake it Off.'"
Swift announced her engagement to Travis Kelce on August 26 after two years of dating.
“Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married 🧨,” she wrote via Instagram with a joint photo post.
Kloss showed her subtle support for the news by “liking” the post.
