Viewers originally saw sparks fly when Steve appeared as Miranda’s bartender in a 1999 episode of the hit HBO series. After having an on and off relationship, the pair welcomed a son, Brady, and one year later, they rekindled their romance and tied the knot.
The first Sex and the City movie created a complication for the duo when Steve admitted that he cheated on Miranda. After a nudge from Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Miranda decided to go to therapy and put in the work to continue to grow alongside Steve.
Before And Just Like That debuted on HBO Max in December 2021, Eigenberg admitted that it was “scary” to return to the role of Miranda’s husband.

“It’s been 20 years since the TV show almost,” the Chicago Fire star exclusively told Us Weekly at the revival’s red carpet premiere in New York City. “I’ve always been an in and out guy. I say that on Sex and the City! I pop in and pop out, so I was trying to find my sea legs a little bit. But it was fun, we snapped back into it. It’s always great seeing the same lovely faces.”

The attorney starts out in SATC season 3 unsure if she wants to be in a serious relationship with the bartender. The twosome eventually take the next step by moving in together, but later call it quits when they can't get on the same page about children.
Miranda shows support for her ex-boyfriend when he opens a bar with Aidan Shaw (John Corbett). After they reconnect, Miranda ends up helping Steve deal with his cancer diagnosis. The duo sleep together which leads to Miranda finding out that she is pregnant during season 4.
The new parents begin to develop romantic feelings for one another again as they both find themselves in relationships with other people. During Brady's first birthday, Miranda and Steve give their romance another try and get married by the end of season 6. The final episodes of the HBO series follow the couple as they make the move to Brooklyn.
In the 2008 film, Miranda and Steve hit a rough patch in their marriage. After Steve cheats on his wife with another woman, their relationship continues to deteriorate until Carrie convinces Miranda to give them another try. Steve and Miranda make an effort to work out their issues and officially reunite on the Brooklyn Bridge.
During the SATC revival, viewers slowly start to piece together that Nixon's character has developed a drinking problem while dealing with the unhappiness in her personal life. She even tells Charlotte (Kristin Davis) that she and Steve haven't had sex "in years." As Miranda dissociates from her issues with raising her teenage son and her strained marriage, she starts to grow closer to Che.
Miranda is forced to face what is going on in her life when Carrie calls her out on her behavior. Nixon's character explained in episode 5 of the revival that it feels as if she has been unhappy in her marriage to Steve "forever."
While discussing her growing reliance on alcohol, Miranda admitted, "I am drinking too much. Yes, we all were in the pandemic, and I guess I just kept going. ... I know me, Carrie. If I really thought I had a problem, I would quit instantly."
After hooking up with Che, who identifies as nonbinary, Miranda admitted that she isn't willing to give up that connection yet, saying, "I don't know if I want to quit that. I've never felt like that in my life."
During the seventh episode, which aired in January 2022, Miranda tried to rekindle her romance with Steve after sending Che multiple DMs — and not hearing back after their hookup. Despite her best efforts to have steamy kitchen sex with her husband, Miranda clearly wasn’t feeling things and the tryst ended quickly.
Later in the episode, Nixon’s character ran into Che and the two ended up in bed together after Che insisted they never got the messages. “I think I’m in love with you,” Miranda said after their night together, but Che responded, “You’re in love with you with me. And the weed doesn’t hurt.”
After realizing that the spark between her and Steve was truly gone, Miranda decided in episode 8, which aired in January 2022, to tell him that she wanted a divorce. "I can't do this anymore," she told him. "I'm not happy."
Steve told her that he was satisfied with their life together, but if she wasn't, he didn't feel like fighting for her again. After their conversation, she decided to fly to Ohio to surprise Che at their comedy show. Earlier in the episode, Che confessed that they also loved Miranda, but they refused to pursue a relationship with her while she was still married to Steve.
As Miranda excitedly pursued her newfound romance with the comedian, Steve was still reeling during the ninth episode.
“How long did you know about it, about her and this Che?” the bartender asked Carrie while they painted a house for charity. “No need to get uncomfortable, I'm just trying to get some information here. This whole thing all came up on me pretty damn fast. Can you help me out here?”
Steve later admitted to the author that he never intends to take off his wedding band, revealing, “I don't care what Miranda does, 'till death do us part. Never coming off.”
In season three of the revival, Miranda and Steve are shocked when their son Brady confesses that he got a woman pregnant.
“Oh, man. You were just getting your life together and now you have f***ed it up so bad,” Steve shouted at his son. “You got someone pregnant. Someone who’s having your baby, who doesn’t wanna be with you. Do you know how messed up that is? It’s f***ing messed up!”
Miranda attempted to defuse the situation before Brady left. She called Carrie and Charlotte for some advice.
“Apparently she’s showing so much there’s no ‘not being pregnant’ option,” Miranda told her friends, adding, “Steve lost it. I’ve never seen him that upset at Brady.”
